NSW 190 NOMINATION IS OPENING!

📅 From 19 October 2026, NSW will open its 2026–27 skilled migration program for the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa.

The 190 is a permanent, points-tested visa, but NSW nomination is highly competitive and you cannot apply directly. Candidates are selected from SkillSelect and invited by NSW to apply for nomination.

🚨 189 invitation round update

A little more waiting for 189 hopefuls. The latest advice from Home Affairs is that the next Skilled Independent (subclass 189) invitation round is now expected in mid-October, after previously being expected by 30 September.

If you already have an EOI in SkillSelect, now’s a good opportunity to give it a quick check and make sure everything is accurate and up to date.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the round and sharing the latest once it lands. 👀

Our Migration Downunder team had the privilege of attending the National Migration Conference in Sydney last week.

One message came through loud and clear: Australia doesn't need to stop migration. It needs a migration program that is better targeted, better planned, and focused on the country's long-term needs.

We heard valuable insights from Allegra Spender MP, Julian Hill MP, Professor Alan Gamlen and Senator Jonathan Duniam, with many speakers highlighting that migration should be measured by outcomes, contribution and national interest, not simply by annual migration numbers.

A standout comment from Allegra Spender was the need to balance "Economy & Love" through both skilled and family migration. Professor Alan Gamlen reminded us that NOM is a measure, not an outcome, while both sides of politics reinforced that the goal is a sustainable migration program that supports Australia's workforce, housing and future prosperity.

Australia's migration story has helped build this country. The challenge now is ensuring migration remains well-planned, sustainable and aligned with the nation's needs.

Migration Downunder started in 1999. Since then, the rules have changed, pathways have evolved and the industry looks very different to what it did 27 years ago.

But one thing hasn’t changed: the significance of what this work means for the people who trust us with it. Behind every application is a major life decision, a family, a career, a relationship, a future.

To mark our 27th birthday, Julie shares the lessons that have stayed with her throughout her career and continue to shape the way we work today.
