๐Ÿšจ Changes to Student Visa Application Rules
From 2 October 2026, new rules affect who can apply for a Student visa (subclass 500) or Student Guardian visa (subclass 590) while in Australia.

Most temporary visa holdersโ€”and current Student visa holders who do not meet an exemptionโ€”must be outside Australia when lodging the application and when the visa is granted.

Limited onshore exemptions include eligible students needing up to 12 additional months to finish their main course with the same provider, PhD and school students, DFAT or Defence-sponsored students, eligible higher-AQF course progression and provider-default cases.

Family members may only be included in specified circumstances, and family generally cannot be added after a Student visa has been granted.

Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 continue under the previous rules.

Check your individual circumstances before enrolling, travelling or lodging an application.

๐Ÿ“ข Important Student Visa Update

From 2 October 2026, new rules affect who can apply for a Student visa or Student Guardian visa while in Australia.

Current Student visa holders and certain other temporary visa holders may need to apply from outside Australia and remain offshore when the visa is granted. Family members can only be included in limited circumstances and generally cannot be added after a Student visa has been granted.

Exceptions may apply, so check your eligibility before lodging.

๐Ÿ“ข Student Transfer Rule Update

From 2 October 2026, most non-school overseas students must generally complete at least 12 months of their principal course before transferring to another provider. This temporary restriction applies until 30 June 2027 and returns to six months from 1 July 2027.

Earlier transfer may still be possible in limited circumstances, including provider closure, registration sanctions, an approved release recorded in PRISMS or written support from a government sponsor.

Check your eligibility before changing providers.

๐Ÿšจ Important Student Visa Update

From 2 October 2026, major changes apply to Subclass 500 applications. Many temporary visa holders and most current Student visa holders applying for a further Student visa as the primary applicant may now need to apply from outside Australia.

Family-member applications are more restricted, while limited onshore exceptions may apply for doctoral students, provider-default cases, completion of studies and eligible course progression.

Swipe through the three posters for the key changes. Every case is differentโ€”check your eligibility before lodging.

โš ๏ธ 485 visa expiring soon? Donโ€™t make your next move just to โ€œbuy time.โ€

If youโ€™re considering a Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa, make sure you understand the pathway, requirements and possible consequences before lodging.

A visa refusal can affect your future options, and review rights or the ability to make another application in Australia will depend on your individual circumstances.

Before you apply, ask the right questions:
โœ“ Do I genuinely meet the 482 requirements?
โœ“ Is this the right pathway for my circumstances?
โœ“ What happens if the application is refused?
โœ“ What options would I have next?
โœ“ How does this fit with my longer-term migration goals?

One rushed decision can affect what options you have next.

Get clear, personalised advice before making an important migration decision.
