Whether you rent, own your home or live under an occupancy agreement, knowing your rights can help protect your home and finances.
🔑 Renting and occupancy agreements
The Residential Tenancies Act 1997 covers rent, bond, repairs, privacy, access, security, ending an agreement and eviction.
If you cannot resolve a dispute with your landlord or accommodation provider, seek legal advice before applying to ACAT.
Legal Aid ACT’s Tenancy Advice Service provides free information and advice to tenants and occupants.

🏠 Reverse mortgages
A reverse mortgage allows homeowners, generally aged 60 or over, to borrow against their home’s value.
However, the amount owed can grow over time, affect government payments and leave less money available for future medical care, aged care or downsizing. Always obtain independent legal and financial advice before entering an agreement.
🌳 Neighbourhood disputes
Common disputes involve noise, trees, animals, fences, privacy and entering another person’s property.
Try to address concerns early by speaking with your neighbour. If that does not work, mediation or legal advice may help. Remember to check ACT rules before trimming protected trees, dealing with noise or making changes to a shared fence.
