They were trying to bring their family together in Australia, but every answer seemed to create another question.

Should their child apply for Australian citizenship by descent?

Should the child be included in the partner visa application?

Which application should happen first?

What forms, documents and evidence would they actually need?

They did not need more general information. They needed someone to look at their circumstances and explain the best way forward.

During their migration consultation, we talked through both the citizenship and partner visa pathways, compared the options and mapped out the order everything should happen in.

They left with clear answers, practical next steps and a much better understanding of how to move forward with bringing their partner and child to Australia.

That is often the real value of a consultation.

If you have a thousand questions and are struggling to work out what applies to your family, you can book an Australian migration consultation through our website.

General information only. Your options will depend on your individual circumstances.

The standard online application fee for a Resident Return Visa is now AUD $1,475.

The standard government fee for an Australian citizenship application by conferral is $595.

So, should you skip the RRV and apply for citizenship instead?

For some permanent residents, citizenship may now make more sense financially and provide a more permanent outcome.

But it is not simply a matter of choosing the cheaper application.

An RRV may still be necessary if:

• you are not eligible for citizenship yet
• you need to travel soon
• you are still deciding whether citizenship is right for you
• your citizenship process will not be completed before your current travel facility expires

Citizenship may be worth considering if:

• Australia is your long-term home
• you meet the residence requirements
• you travel regularly
• you want an Australian passport
• you do not want to keep renewing your ability to return as a permanent resident

You may even need both: an RRV for immediate travel and citizenship as the longer-term pathway.

A previous client recently came to us with this exact decision.

During their consultation, we reviewed their eligibility, costs, travel needs, test concerns and the timing of both options.

They left with a clear strategy and decided to engage our team to prepare and manage their citizenship application.

Have questions about your permanent visa travel facility, an RRV or whether citizenship is the right next step?

We recently had a consultation with someone as they ran into difficulties during their case and didn’t know what to do next.

And they had a few options… HOWEVER

The only reason they had a few options is because they booked in their consultation with us as soon and this problem surfaced

If they waited any longer they were weeks out from being too old to apply for certain visas and had less time before their current visa ran out.

If your visa situation is complicated, get advice from the people who specialise in complex cases.

Your relationship does not have to look “normal” to qualify for a partner visa

A lot of people assume they cannot apply for a partner visa because their relationship does not fit the usual picture.

Maybe your family does not know. Maybe your culture or religion makes it hard to live together before marriage. Maybe you have had to keep things private.

These situations are more common than you think.

A difficult social aspect does not stop you from applying for a partner visa. It just means your application needs to clearly explain your situation and show the evidence in the right way.

That is why strategy matters.

Follow for more partner visa advice that actually reflects real relationships.

A marriage certificate proves you are legally married.

It does not prove your relationship is genuine and ongoing, which is what the Department actually looks at when deciding a partner visa application.

That means showing evidence of how you live your lives together, how you share finances, how you stay in contact, what your future plans look like, and how friends and family know about your relationship.

For some couples, that could include joint bills, shared travel, lease agreements, messages, photos, or statements from family and friends.

Every relationship is different, which means there is no single document that guarantees approval.

If you are relying on a marriage certificate alone, you could be missing some of the most important evidence in your application.

We have created a guide with evidence ideas and insights from the lawyers working on partner visa cases every day.

DM us “GUIDE” and we will send it to you so you can start gathering the evidence you actually need.
