NSW has opened its 2026-27 subclass 190 nomination program.

NSW expects its first invitation round in the week commencing 19 October 2026, has published an updated Skills List (78 ANZSCO unit groups), and says the subclass 491 is still closed to new applicants. NSW does not publicly announce round dates, so treat that date as an expectation.

Planning to study in Australia while on another visa?

New Student visa rules started on 2 October 2026. Who can apply from inside Australia has changed, and family members can generally no longer be added. Holders of 485, 482, working holiday, visitor and other listed temporary visas must now apply from outside Australia, and current Student visa holders must too unless an exemption applies.

Is your occupation on the skilled visa priority list?

Directions 121 and 122 put seven sectors in the top processing tier from 19 September. But each sector is defined by specific ANZSCO codes inside the Directions, not by the sector name - and those lists are not on the Department's summary page.

Some of what is on the list is unexpected:

- Construction takes in Engineering Managers, Architects and Landscape Architects, Safety Inspectors, Crane, Hoist and Lift Operators, and both Electrician codes.
- Healthcare names Aged or Disabled Carer, Nursing Support Worker and Personal Care Assistant directly, not by implication.
- Resources includes Fitter and Turner, Fitter-Welder and Metal Machinist.
- Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fishing is a function test rather than a code list, and it expressly names slaughter, dressing, boning, slicing and processing. Meat processing is inside it.

Priority is about the order applications are picked up, not whether they succeed. Direction 121 says so expressly.

Skilled visa processing changed on 19 September 2026

Ministerial Directions 121 and 122 replaced Direction 119. Two things most of the coverage is missing.

1. They apply to applications already lodged and not finally determined, not only to new ones. If you are already in the queue, you have already been reordered.

2. "Education" became "Teaching occupation", and that is a defined list of seven ANZSCO entries. It takes in child care workers, child care centre managers, school principals and faculty heads. It leaves out most of the education sector, including university tutors and teachers' aides. Read the codes, not the label.

Also worth knowing. A primary applicant who was in Australia when the application was made now ranks above one who was outside it. And the offshore tier turns on whether the application is combined with another person's, which is worth advice rather than a rule of thumb.

Direction 121 covers the subclass 482. Direction 122 covers 186, 187, 189, 190, 191, 489, 491, 494, 887 and 888.

Priority is not eligibility. Direction 121 says so expressly.

Migration reform announced - 17 September 2026

Seven changes were announced by the Minister for Home Affairs, covering student visas, visitor visas, working holiday visas and skilled processing.

No start date has been announced for any of them. Because these are being made by regulation rather than legislation, they do not need to pass Parliament, so they can start at short notice.

The bigger ones:

- A ballot for second and third year Working Holiday visas. 45,000 second year places, down from 57,000, and 5,000 for the third year.
- A No Further Stay condition on all visitor visas.
- Most international students barred from bringing family, with exceptions for PhD students and applicants from the Pacific and some South-East Asian countries.
- No more visa hopping. You cannot move between courses unless the new one is a higher qualification.
- Priority processing for nine sectors including healthcare, construction and education.

One caution worth knowing: these figures came from the Minister's press conference, not the written release, and none of it is in a legislative instrument yet. Plan around the direction, not the numbers.

If you are close to lodging, the timing question is worth asking now rather than later.

Before you panic: if you are already enrolled and studying, your course does not end. You can finish.

What ends on 5 October 2026 is new commencements.

And please do not rush to start a course just to protect your visa. In packaged courses especially, that can create a Genuine Student problem later.

The Government's own documents reveal how serious the partner visa backlog really is.

131,000+ partner visa applications are currently waiting.
Only 40,500 places are allocated per year.

That's years of waiting for most couples.

The good news: Ministerial Direction 117 (effective July 2026) now gives onshore applicants higher priority than those offshore. If you're already in Australia, you move up the queue.

But priority processing isn't automatic — you need to show BOTH compassionate AND compelling grounds.

✅ What CAN qualify for priority:
→ Long-term relationship (3+ yrs, or 2+ with children) at lodgement
→ Sponsor's serious or terminal illness / disability
→ LGBTQI+ couple in a country not recognising same-sex relationships
→ Family violence claims
→ Pregnancy complications threatening health of mother or baby
→ Medical examinations about to expire
→ Safety at risk due to conflict or natural disaster
→ Country subject to international emergency or evacuation
→ Dependent child approaching the 23-year age cut-off
→ Processing beyond the 90th percentile globally

❌ What does NOT qualify on its own:
→ Financial hardship
→ Pain and suffering of separation
→ Pregnancy (without medical complications)
→ Intending to start a family
→ Employment or travel reasons
→ Pre-arranged wedding plans or passport expiry

🚨 NT SKILLED NOMINATIONS NOW OPEN – 2026-27

Big news: the Northern Territory has secured 1,850 nominations for 2026-27 — the HIGHEST Subclass 491 allocation of any Australian jurisdiction.

Nominations are open now (from 8:00am today, 21 August 2026):
✅ 1,000 × Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)
✅ 850 × Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated (Permanent)

That's 200 more than last year (up from 1,650). Allocations close when full — so if NT nomination is part of your pathway, act now.

⚠️ FAMILY VISA QUEUE RESHUFFLED — 25 JULY 2026

Ministerial Direction 117 is now in effect, replacing Direction 102. Whether you have a family visa application already waiting or are about to lodge one — the processing order has changed.

🔑 The biggest shift: Being IN Australia when you apply now puts you in the HIGHER priority group, ahead of equivalent offshore applicants.

📋 The full processing order (within each group):
1️⃣ Ministerial Intervention cases
2️⃣ Partner & Child visas
3️⃣ Orphan Relative visas
4️⃣ Contributory Parent visas (SC 143, 173, 864, 884)
5️⃣ Carer visas
6️⃣ Parent & Other Family visas (SC 103, 804)

This applies to:

If the Department asks for more information about your partner visa, that request is now your only opportunity to respond.

No reminder. No second letter. If the deadline passes, your application can be decided on whatever is already sitting in your file.

Partner visas are the one category where the evidence has to keep being true. The question is not whether your relationship was genuine when you applied — it is whether it is genuine and ongoing today.

Four things worth checking this week:

✓ Any request for extra time must be made WITHIN the original timeframe, with reasons
✓ Refresh your relationship evidence every 6-12 months while you wait — financial, household and social
✓ At the two-year mark the permanent stage does NOT start automatically. Someone has to commence it in ImmiAccount
✓ Check your ImmiAccount contact details are current, and check the account regularly

Most of the trouble we see is not caused by weak relationships. It is a letter nobody opened, evidence that stopped at lodgement, or a form nobody commenced.
