Animals Australia has commenced proceedings in the Victorian Supreme Court challenging the government's decision to unprotect dingoes in the east of the State. The government's decision allows people to trap, poison and shoot dingoes in the region (which are estimated to number between 2,640 and 8,800) until 2028.

Dingoes are a listed as "vulnerable" under Victoria's Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, meaning that they face a "high risk of extinction in the wild over the medium term". The government's decision increases this risk for dingoes in eastern Victoria.

Dingoes are of cultural and spiritual significance to many Traditional Owners, and are apex predators who play a critical role in the healthy functioning of our native ecosystems. K & R Animal Law supports Animals Australia's litigation and considers that dingoes should remain protected at law.

Dr Danielle Ireland Piper's recent article provides further insights and analysis of the issues.

A recent Essential poll found that:
• 36% of people think that the Melbourne Cup ‘normalises animal cruelty’, and
• 62% of people have ‘little interest’ or ‘no interest’ in the race.

Racehorses suffer and die on racetracks every year, and we proudly support the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses’ Nup to the Cup campaign.

In the spirit of reconciliation, K & R Animal Law wholeheartedly supports the Constitution being amended to establish the Voice to Parliament and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia.

We are optimistic that the Voice’s ability to make representations to Parliament and the Executive would lead to more informed and equitable law and public policy on matters that impact First Nations people.

We hope Australia will say 'yes' and will attempt to deliver on each of the key elements in the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

RSPCA South Australia is recruiting Legal Counsel to prepare and run criminal prosecutions under the Animal Welfare Act 1985 (SA).

Applications close 6 May 2022. This would undoubtedly be a challenging and rewarding position!

For more than 100 years, RSPCA South Australia has been the state’s only animal welfare charity entrusted by State Parliament to investigate animal cruelty under SA’s Animal Welfare Act. Each year, RSPCA South Australia Inspectors investigate over 5,000 allegations of cruelty to animals, of whic...

This article summarises the basis upon which we consider that animals deserve far greater legal protection: "Science is generating more and more reasons to accept animals' emotions, without finding any new reasons to deny them."

There's more and more evidence emerging that invertebrates like octopus and even bees experience emotions, and that should affect how we treat them, researchers say.
