NRMA shafting injured people, and not for the first time!!

In our submission to the six-year review of the ACT Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Scheme, the ALA has called for significant reforms to improve access, fairness and transparency for people injured on ACT roads.

“People dealing with serious injury and trauma may not immediately understand the Scheme, know that they have a claim or appreciate the importance of acting within a relatively short timeframe,” said ALA ACT President Amy Burr (Blumers Lawyers).

“A compensation scheme should not create unnecessary procedural barriers that prevent otherwise eligible people from accessing assistance.”

The ALA remains concerned about the inherent power imbalances that remain within the complex Scheme and has called for greater transparency around premiums, insurer performance, and the independent medicolegal examinations process required as part of the Quality-of-Life application.

We welcome the six-year review and are ready to work with the ACT Government and the MAIC on reforms arising from the review.
