After a divorce, many women choose to go back to the name they had before marriage. In most cases, you can do this using your divorce certificate and marriage certificate when updating your records.

You don't have to change your name at all if you don't want to. It's entirely your choice.

10 years. One very special team member.

We celebrated a big milestone this week: Lisa’s 10-year anniversary with Family Focus Legal.

Lisa joined us in 2016, bringing almost 25 years of experience with her, and she’s been a quiet strength in this place ever since. A decade of showing up for our clients and our team with care, patience and a lot of heart.

Thank you Lisa, for everything you bring. We’re so glad family law found you, and that you found us 💚

Here’s to 10 years, and to many more.

Messaging an ex-partner after separation can quickly escalate. A simple guide for co-parent communication:

✔️ Brief: say what you need to say, no more
✔️ Informative: stick to facts about the children and arrangements
✔️ Friendly: stay civil, even when it's hard
✔️ Firm: be clear, without being aggressive

Your messages can be read by others later, so write them as if they will be.

Joint debt + divorce = who actually pays?

If you’ve got a mortgage, credit cards or other debts in both names, separating doesn’t automatically mean the debt disappears - or that each person simply pays 50%.

In this video, we explain what can happen to joint debt when you divorce and what you need to know before making any financial decisions.

There's no law stopping you from seeing someone new the moment you separate.

Whether it's a smart move is a completely different question.

We're breaking down what it can actually mean for your case.

Agreeing between yourselves who's responsible for a joint debt doesn't automatically change what the bank can do.

If a loan or credit card is in both your names, you're both still fully liable for the whole thing, even if a formal Consent Order says otherwise.

That's because the order applies between you and your ex, not your lender. The bank still needs to separately agree to release one of you, usually through a refinance.

If your ex stops paying in the meantime, the bank can still pursue you for the debt.

How can you protect your young children under your Will?

A testamentary trust is able to be established in your Will to protect the interests of your young children until they reach a certain age, rather than handing it to them all at once.

It is a way to ensure the inheritance is managed and accessible for your young children for their maintenance, education, or benefit.

It is a common tool for parents wanting to protect what they leave behind for their kids.
