What a week! Three full days of mediations helping people reach agreement in their family law property and parenting disputes. Exhausting but satisfying work, topped off by a lovely email from a solicitor for one of the parties earlier this week following their 7 hour (successful) mediation.

Thank you so much to all of my valued referrers for entrusting your clients with me to help them resolve their family law property and parenting settlements. The past 6 months have been busier than ever.

I am introducing a small fee increase for mediations booked after 1 July - a half day (4 hour) mediation will now cost $1,100 per party and a full day (7 hour) mediation will be $1,925.

What is financial disclosure?

Anyone who is involved in a family law property settlement is required by the Court Rules to be transparent about their finances. This includes their income, expenditure, assets, liabilities and superannuation.

Documentation about all of these issues is generally exchanged between the parties prior to negotiations commencing and commonly includes things like bank account statements, income tax returns, payslips, superannuation statements, loan statements and information about shares or other assets.

The provision of this financial material is essential if parties are to negotiate in the full knowledge of the composition of their property pool. The Court sometimes describes it as ‘laying your cards on the table, face up’. It’s a great description.
