April Fool’s Day is traditionally a day of practical jokes and small pranks. Collecting 200,000 packets of tampons, sanitary pads and other sanitary products in a month may seem like a crazy prank, but this outrageous goal is what’s planned for Share the Dignity's April collection. April 1, 2017 is the beginning of our with sites all over Australia starting their collection of donated sanitary products for distribution to homeless and at risk women.
Share The Dignity is a not-for-profit registered charity providing homeless and at risk women nationally with sanitary products to allow them a sense of dignity at a time when they need it the most, believing that access to sanitary items is a right not a privilege.
Over 85,000 women were accessing specialist homelessness services across Australia in 2012 and the 2011 census showed over 105,000 people were homeless on census night, of which nearly half were women. Many of these women have fixed or limited incomes and choosing what to spend their money on is a matter of survival.
Share the Dignity collected and distributed over 450,000 packets of tampons and pads to women’s shelters and various organisation assisting women fleeing domestic violence and at risk and disadvantaged women in our community. This year we hope to be bigger and better, providing even more products to more organisations and ultimately more women across Australia.
Share the Dignity Founder, Rochelle Courtney said “No woman should suffer the indignity of choosing between eating, feeding her children or buying sanitary items. This appeal provides a necessity for women, giving them back their dignity at a time when they need it the most”
