Each year on June 3rd Mabo Day recognises Mer Island man, Eddie Mabo.

Eddie Mabo fought to over turn the colonial doctrine of terra nullius, or ‘land belonging to none’. Fighting to challenge the claim that his families traditional land was owned by the Crown.

The Mabo Case ran for 10 years, the High Court of Australian deciding that terra nullius should not have been applied to Australia. The decision recognising that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights to the land that existed before the British arrived, and to this day.

The Mabo decision is one of high importance, acknowledging that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have rights to, and interests in, land according to their laws and customs.

National Sorry Day or the National Day of Healing, is a day that acknowledges thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were removed from their families and communities and placed into institutions, fostered out or adopted by non-Indigenous families due to past government policies. These children became known as the Stolen Generation.

Today is a day to show commitment towards reconciliation.

BREAKING NEWS

Two class actions on behalf of First Nations families have been launched by Bottoms English Lawyers against the Queensland Department of Child Safety based on complaints from hundreds of First Nations families about discriminatory experiences. These two classes actions are together referred to as the “DOCS Class Action”.

The class action involves claims for breaches of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) by the Qld Department of Child Safety, towards both children who were removed from their families, and parents who had children removed. In both groups, claims of unlawful discrimination on the basis of race or descent are made. It is also claimed the Department failed to adhere to the Child Placement Principles within the Child Protection Act 1999 (Qld).
