7 Mind-blowing Facts About Australian Healthcare 🤯
1️⃣ Public hospitals have a financial compensation system for extended waiting times for elective surgeries. The National Elective Surgery Waiting Times sets maximum timeframes for different types of operations 💰
2️⃣ Antibiotics are strictly prescribed according to PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) protocols. Australia is one of the countries with the strictest antibiotic control. However, most medications cost residents only $30-40 with subsidies 🤒
3️⃣ Ambulance services are not free in most states! Basic callout costs from $400-1000. Only Queensland and Tasmania offer free services for local residents. That's why Australians separately insure ambulance services - Ambulance Cover 🚑
4️⃣ Dental care is not covered by Medicare and is exclusively private. Teeth cleaning: $100-200, filling: $150-300, root canal: up to $3000. This is why many Australians include dental coverage in their private health insurance 🦷
5️⃣ You can get up to 20 sessions with a psychologist per year (increased after COVID) through Medicare. A doctor's referral is required 🧠
6️⃣ Childbirth in the public system is free with Medicare. This includes pregnancy care, private delivery room, and specialist consultations. Private system starts from $10,000 but offers more comfort 🤰
7️⃣ Cancer treatment is completely free under Medicare, with most medications subsidized through PBS 🏥

Why Are Australian Retirees Smiling? Let me tell you about a system where every detail is well thought out!
In Australia, retirement isn't about survival - it's a new chapter of life.
Australians spend their whole lives planning what they'll do in retirement.
Here's how the unique three-tier system works:
Age Pension

$26,616 per year for singles
$40,206 for couples
Available after 10 years of residing in the country (5 of them continuously)
Based on your income and assets, not work history

Superannuation

Employers must contribute 11% of your salary
Rate will increase to 12% from July 2025
Money is invested and grows over years
Access to savings from age 65-67

Personal Savings and Investments

Special tax conditions for retirement investments
Opportunity to diversify income
Flexible investment strategies

The Pensioner Concession Card provides:

Subsidized medications
Utility bill discounts
Reduced public transport fares
Additional Medicare benefits

You know what surprises me the most? Here, retirement is often a new beginning.
Because the system truly allows you to stop worrying about survival and start enjoying life!

New Immigration Path for Outstanding Specialists: National Innovation Visa (NIV)
From December 7, 2024, Australia has introduced a new migration program for talented individuals - the National Innovation Visa (NIV).
It replaces the former Global Talent Visa and is designed for people with world-class achievements.
"If you're an expert in cutting-edge technologies such as robotics, quantum computing, or clean energy, this program opens unique opportunities."
Key Features of NIV
Candidates submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), and the system selects the best candidates and issues invitations.
Who Can Apply?
NIV program prioritizes the following categories:
Recipients of prestigious international awards. For example, Nobel Prize, Fields Medal, Booker Prize, or Olympic gold.
Exceptionally talented individuals recommended by Australian government agencies.
These can be agencies at federal, state, or territory level.
Experts in key technology areas:

Critical technologies
Renewable and low-carbon technologies
Healthcare

Talents in other significant industries:

Agri-products and agrotechnology

Five Australian Celebrities Share Their Favorite Holiday Spots

Australia has many hidden, beautiful, and interesting places.
Remy Hii - Malaysian-Australian actor: "If you're up for a road trip and have friends who can chip in for petrol, Lake Mungo is a must-visit. Lake Mungo is home to massive sand dunes, epic sunsets, wild emus, and the world's oldest ritual burial sites. Book a tour with a local guide (the only way to access these prehistoric sites) and be in awe of the Mars-like desert landscapes and the significance of this land to our Indigenous peoples."
Guy Sebastian - ARIA award-winning singer-songwriter and Australian Idol winner: "Definitely Gerroa, New South Wales. It has the amazing Seven Mile Beach, a rare spot on the East Coast where the sun sets over the beach. There's also great fishing, surfing, and golf courses (Gerringong, Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Valley), plus it's just ten minutes from scenic Berry. Such a first-class location."
Grace Tame - sexual assault survivor advocate and former Australian of the Year: "Bay of Fires on Tassie's north-east coast. (I love) the endless white sand beaches; pristine turquoise ocean; orange rocks; bush-covered headlands and solitude."
Michael Klim - Australian Olympic gold medal swimmer: "My favorite spot would have to be Noosa. I've traveled the Sunshine Coast over many years, first for training camps during competition, and more recently for my new ventures, including World Series swims and the Noosa Food and Wine Festival. Noosa offers so much: amazing nature walks, great surfing, culinary masterpieces, and more."
Sam Kerr - champion footballer and Matildas captain: "Rottnest Island." This magical spot off Perth's coast is also one of our favorite places in Australia - not just for the friendly quokkas, but for the incredible azure blue waters.

New Gold Prospecting Area Opens in Australia

A gold rush has erupted in the small Australian town of Clermont. Thousands of people visit the region each year to try their luck.
The tourism development company estimates that Clermont receives about 2,500 visitors annually - roughly equal to the town's population.
Clermont's gold history began in 1861 when alluvial gold was first discovered in the area. The recent influx of visitors has been a blessing for the town's residents and surrounding communities. Everyone needs fuel, accommodation, and food.
Recently, a new 507-hectare fossicking area opened in Blair Athol State Forest near Clermont, bringing the total number of prospecting fields in the region to 12. All gold traders must have a valid license, which can be purchased on the Queensland Government website.

Melbourne Bans E-Scooter Rentals: Safety Takes Priority Over Environmental Benefits

Despite e-scooters helping to reduce the city's carbon emissions by more than 400 tons, Melbourne has decided to ban them due to safety concerns.
In recent years, e-scooters have become a common sight on streets of major cities worldwide. However, despite advantages like environmental friendliness and quick mobility, this mode of transport has sparked numerous debates due to increasing accidents.
In Melbourne, ranked among the world's best cities in 2024, authorities have decided to completely ban e-scooter rentals, citing safety concerns.
Melbourne City Council voted to terminate contracts with the two main e-scooter operators, Lime and Neuron, giving them 30 days' notice to remove their vehicles.
"This was an opportunity to end the chaos on Melbourne's footpaths and make our city safe again. Recently, I've heard residents, traders, and visitors to Melbourne literally begging us to end the trial to make our city safe again." - Nicholas Reece of Melbourne
The popularity of this relatively new mode of transport has led to an increase in accidents and injuries.
Notably, Melbourne isn't the only city questioning e-scooter safety. For instance, Barcelona has partially banned them in historic districts since 2016. In Moscow, new restrictions and rules for e-scooter use were introduced this summer, along with a survey about completely banning such transport.
What do you think - is this mode of transport necessary?

Australians Recognized as the Most Gambling-Prone Nation
Almost every bar and club in the country has gaming machines (pokies).
While Nevada, USA, with its famous Las Vegas, is known as the world's gambling capital with the highest concentration of slot machines and casinos, New South Wales in Australia takes second place. This state operates 90,000 gaming machines - approximately 1 machine per 88 residents. For comparison, Nevada has 120,000 machines (1 per 25 residents).
However, there's a catch in these statistics. Las Vegas is a unique place for the US, with its unusual culture featured in books, movies, and TV shows. But in New South Wales, this is nothing unusual for Australia. The Guardian highlighted several interesting facts:

Australia has 1% of the world's population but houses 18% of the world's gaming machines
The world's leading gaming machine manufacturer is the Australian company Aristocrat
76% of gaming machines located outside major casinos (in bars, shops, and everyday venues) are in Australia
Australians lose approximately $25 billion annually to gambling

This enormous sum, calculated by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, is explained by the everyday nature of gambling: many Australians don't visit special large casinos but spend every evening gambling near home, routinely and inconspicuously. The only exception is Western Australia, where machines are only permitted in casinos. As a result, this state has the lowest share of financial losses.
Have you ever been to a casino? Do you enjoy gambling?

Adelaide's Southern Suburbs to Welcome Thousands of New Homes
Over 3,500 homes will be built in Adelaide's southern suburbs on the site of the former Port Stanvac oil refinery. This will not only allow buyers to enjoy pristine coastline but also provide enough new housing to finally help reduce prices.
The 230-hectare site, which has been vacant for 15 years, will be redeveloped by Melbourne-based MAB Corporation to build 3,600 new homes in the southern suburbs.
The project, expected to be completed by 2028, stipulates that 15% of the new homes will be designated for low-income housing.

Melbourne Zoo Welcomes Baby White Rhinoceros
A baby white rhinoceros has been born at Melbourne Zoo.
As this is an endangered species, every new birth is a cause for celebration.
This is a significant event for wildlife conservation efforts, as white rhinos face serious threats in the wild primarily due to poaching and habitat loss. Each successful birth in captivity helps maintain genetic diversity and supports the species' survival.
White rhinoceros are the second-largest land mammal after elephants, and while they're called "white," they're actually more grey in color. The name is believed to come from the Dutch word "wijd" (meaning "wide") referring to their wide, square lips, which was misinterpreted as "white."

Emperor Penguin Surprises Australian Residents After Appearing on a Western Australian Beach Following a Long Journey from Antarctica.
The weakened penguin has been taken into care by a local wildlife specialist. Recovery is expected to take several weeks.
The penguin was likely carried north by ocean currents while searching for food.
Emperor penguins are endangered due to climate change, as they depend on sea ice for breeding and protection from predators.
