Congratulations to Senior Associate Matilda Gee, who has been named a finalist for Wellness Advocate of the Year in the Lawyers Weekly 2026 Women in Law Awards!

Balancing a legal career with competitive triathlon takes serious motivation and time management.

Matilda does both, and she is passionate about sharing why it matters.

She is a strong advocate for physical exercise as a foundation for mental wellbeing, cognitive performance and longevity in the legal profession. Her advocacy for wellness in law is grounded in her belief that we perform at our best when we take care of ourselves.

Matilda’s work in the wellness space extends beyond the four walls of our office – she is also prominent within the triathlon community as an advocate for work-life balance.

Through her social media, Matilda shares an honest, unfiltered look at life as a full-time lawyer and triathlete. She shows how she fits training, movement and other wellbeing practices into a demanding schedule, making wellness feel achievable rather than aspirational, and encouraging others in the profession to prioritise their own wellbeing alongside their careers.

Matilda also uses her platform to raise much-needed funds and awareness for charity each year, for causes such as the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.

Each year she hosts a morning tea at the firm, inspiring colleagues to give back, while also using this platform to share practical tips on fitting training around legal practice.

The Women in Law Awards celebrate the best and brightest women in the Australian legal profession.

Winners will be announced at a black-tie gala at Crown Melbourne on Thursday 12 November 2026.

We couldn’t be prouder of you, Matilda! 👏

Why is your lawyer suddenly asking where your money came from?

No...

It's not because you've done anything wrong.

And no...

You're not under investigation.

From 1 July 2026, Australian law changed.

Law firms across Australia are now required to ask more questions before providing certain legal services.

So, if you're:

- Buying or selling property
- Buying or selling a business
- Setting up a trust or company
- Administering an estate
- Completing a significant commercial transaction
..don't be surprised if your lawyer asks you to:

✔ Verify your identity
✔ Explain where your purchase funds came from
✔ Provide information about your company or trust
✔ Confirm who ultimately owns or controls an entity
✔ Answer a few additional questions about your transaction

Here's the important thing...

These questions aren't about suspecting honest people.

They are about protecting Australia's financial system from money laundering, organised crime and fraud. They now apply to law firms across the country.

Think back to when banks first started asking everyone for photo identification.

At the time it felt unusual.

Today it's completely normal.

These new legal requirements are likely to become exactly the same.

At Ramsden Lawyers, we are committed to making the process simple, transparent and as seamless as possible.

To help our clients understand these changes, click the link below to read our latest article explaining:

If you're likely to buy property, sell a business, establish a trust, or engage a lawyer in the future, it's well worth a quick read.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our office.

New AML/CTF laws mean Australian law firms must verify client identity & funds source. Learn what to expect when engaging Ramsden Lawyers.
