Our CEO Jo Leveritt gladly accepted an invitation to speak at Services Australia’s staff Daily Stand Up meeting this morning as part of Homelessness Week 2026.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share more about the work of Bundaberg Street Law Ltd, including our legal clinics and our pilot Steps Forward Child Safety program, and to speak with people who are also working closely with community members in times of need.

It also allowed Jo the chance to learn more about the important work Services Australia’s Social Work team undertakes every day, supporting people across a range of services and helping connect them with the assistance they need.

Homelessness Week is an important reminder for us all that meaningful change often starts with everyday conversations. By listening and learning to act with compassion, we can build greater community understanding, strengthen commitment to ending homelessness, and help create safer environments where children, families and communities can thrive.

Important safety announcement for people who are experiencing family and domestic violence.

Domestic violence support groups are warning people to take extra precautions if they keep a secret safety phone ahead of a mandatory nationwide test run of an emergency warning system, next Monday 27 July 2026.

At 2pm ALL compatible mobile devices nationwide will emit a loud 10 second siren, vibrate and display a test message - even if the device is on silent or do not disturb.

You can turn off your phone or smartwatch if you're worried.

We always welcome connections and collaborations with other groups and associations whose values align with ours at Bundaberg Street Law; so it was a wonderful opportunity to host Kelly Moore from Women's Legal Service Queensland on her recent visit to our region.

Kelly made time in her schedule to visit one of our free drop-in legal clinics to see how we “do what we do,” and to meet some of our dedicated team of volunteers and board members.

Kelly also met some local community members at the Queensland Day Awards event that was hosted by Tom Smith - Member for Bundaberg - where both she and I had the opportunity to speak with Deputy Leader of the Opposition Cameron Dick MP who is very familiar with community legal work and pro-bono legal services having previously been a lawyer doing this work.

Networks and connections need to exist in the real world not simply on social media platforms to have real impact in our communities and people’s lives. The numbers of followers or views can make us feel seen, but they do not necessarily translate into actions and changes, so we appreciate having the chance to meet in person and talk face to face about the programs, initiatives, and future for our region.

National Volunteering Week 2026 celebrates the theme “Your Year to Volunteer”, recognising the important role volunteers play in our local communities and organisations all across Australia.

At Bundaberg Street Law, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their contribution extends beyond our drop in legal clinics with their skills and support helping strengthen community connections. A heartfelt Thank You to every volunteer (past and present) who helps us to keep helping others.

Today our CEO Jo Leveritt MAICD was proudly manning the stand at the Bundaberg Regional Council 2026 Volunteering Expo to showcase what we do and engage with potential volunteers.

To think that our charity was started only a few years ago during Covid from very humble beginnings, as Jo explained in a recent interview with Volunteering Queensland which you can read about here "Justice, Made Accessible"
