People remember the hair and the yellow glasses. What I'd rather they remember is that we sorted their wills in one sitting, in plain English, without the drama.

I'm Michelle Carson, Director and Principal Solicitor at Cameron Rogers & Co. in Buderim.

The firm has looked after Sunshine Coast families since 1981. Property and wills & estates are what I do all day.

Three things I say to nearly every client:

1. Your will is only half the plan. If you lose capacity, your family needs an enduring power of attorney, not a will. Without one they can end up at QCAT just to deal with the bank.

2. A ten-year-old will is probably wrong. Marriage, separation, kids, a new house or a business all change the answer.

3. The DIY kit is cheap until it isn't. The estate disputes I see often start with a will that was unclear or wasn't signed properly.

Talking about dying is uncomfortable. My job is to make it a normal conversation, ask the right questions, and get it done properly so your family never has to untangle it after you're gone.

A will is only half the plan.

Your will takes effect after you pass away. An enduring power of attorney works while you’re alive: it lets someone you trust manage your finances, and your personal and health matters, if illness or injury means you can’t.

Without one, your family may have to apply to QCAT before they can manage your finances.
