Born in Himamaylan, a country town in Negros Occidental, Philippines, my family were modest tailors. Growing up in a working class family, we lived simply and always went without, but being brought up in such a hardy environment taught me the valuable life lessons of resilience, perseverance, and most of all, education. Thankfully, my parents valued education highly, and provided the support that my siblings and I needed to advance in life.
Through hard work and diligence, I completed both elementary and high school as class valedictorian, after which I moved to Bacolod City. I like to call Bacolod City the Philippines “Brisvegas,” as both cities are known as the “City of Smiles,” and “City of The Sunshine State,” respectively. The people of both are much like the weather – warm and inviting. It was in Bacolod that I obtained my Bachelor of Accountancy at STI West Negros University (formerly called West Negros College) as Cum Laude (Graduate with Honour).
Soon after, I landed a job at Metrobank which gave me an introduction to finance and the corporate world. I married at the young age of 24, and in my two years of married Iife, I saw a drastic decline in the state of the Philippines economy. The rapid decline made me fear the future for myself, my wife, and the family we were about to create. I immediately started researching about Australia as I was lucky enough to have had my sister migrate to Australia in 1983.
A lot of friends questioned my decision to migrate to Australia. At the time, I had worked my way up to the position of Financial Controller at STI University, all the while studying a Bachelor of Law at the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos. My wife was also doing well and working as an accounting officer. Our friends and family said they would rather be in our shoes. At that time however, the only thing I had in mind was safety and financial stability for my family. I could feel the tension of the unstable Filipino government and the potential threat to the quality of lives for its citizens. To me, my family’s future was more important than prestige.
