🇦🇺 IMPORTANT STUDENT VISA CHANGES, FROM 2 OCTOBER 2026

Significant changes to Australia’s Student visa (Subclass 500) rules are now in effect.

The changes affect, among other things:

✈️ Applying for another Student visa while in Australia
🎓 Onshore exemptions for certain current Student visa holders
👨‍👩‍👧 Including partners and dependent children
🚫 Subsequent entrant applications
🔄 Students seeking to move from dependant to primary Student visa holder

For many applicants, a further Student visa will now need to be lodged offshore, and the applicant must also be outside Australia when the visa is granted, unless an applicable exemption is met.

There are limited exemptions, including certain circumstances involving course progression, completion of the principal course, PhD studies, DFAT/Defence sponsorship, school studies and provider default.

Family-member rules have also changed significantly.

👉 Please read through our 4-slide update for an overview of the changes.

⚠️ Every applicant’s circumstances are different. Whether you can lodge onshore, include family members, or meet an exemption depends on your individual circumstances and visa history. Please seek advice from a Registered Migration Agent before making decisions about your visa, enrolment or travel arrangements.

Risk levels may change, but the fundamentals don’t- a strong Student Visa application must always demonstrate genuine study intentions, credible financial capacity and appropriate English language ability.

What an amazing experience visiting Western Sydney University’s Parramatta South campus!

Such a huge and impressive campus, and walking around honestly brought back memories of my own university days at Monash. 😊

A big thank you to Zoe Song for having us and for taking the time to show us around the campus. Really appreciated the warm welcome and the opportunity to see the facilities and experience the campus atmosphere firsthand.

Thoroughly enjoyed the visit!
