The Naughton McCarthy team have just attented the 2023 Family Law Practioners Association (FLPA) Retreat at the QT hotel on the Gold Coast.

Our lawyers attended a full schedule of entertaining, informative and practical papers, presented by leaders from inside and outside the Family Law milieu. FLPA are to be particularly congratulated in ensuring this year’s program examined the confluence of Family Law with Succession Law, Criminal Law and (the standout session for the writer) Defamation Law, the latter presented by Sue Chrysanthou SC. The paper by Phil Looney KC, Simone Fraser of French Quarter Chambers and Joe Box of Grant Thornton on the knotty issue of “value to owner” energised the Saturday sessions.

Always a pleasure to connect and reconnect with friends and colleagues, and meet new people from the professions over the course of the program.

Naughton McCarthy’s very own Maddison Borg debuts next week as coach of Basketball Queensland’s Women’s Team in the national Ivor Burge Championships, for players with intellectual disabilities, to be held in Geelong.

Speaking with Brisbane’s Courier Mail, Maddie said : “This is huge for Queensland. I am aware that Basketball Queensland have been working incredibly hard to build their inclusion pathways, not only for ID athletes, but also for indigenous athletes and for the Rollers (wheelchair basketball) … a lot of my girls really don’t know how good they are… we are ready to show we are a force to reckoned with.”

In her characteristic modesty Maddie omits to mention that she has been the big driver in recruitment of players, fund raising , training and getting together tne players’ kit so that they look the goods - all the while working full-time as a Family Law solicitor.

Maddie - we are proud of you. Best of luck for the Championships . Go the Maroon gals !
