Meet the YHC Lawyers Team!

Since joining YHC Lawyers as an Administrative Assistant, Sarah Wilson has grown into her role as a Paralegal with enthusiasm and a desire to learn. Our clients have described Sarah as friendly, professional and efficient, and we're delighted to have Sarah as part of our team.

Here's what Sarah had to say about her journey at YHC Lawyers.

*************************************************************

Hi, my name is Sarah and I am in my third year at the University of Queensland studying a dual degree in Law and Science, majoring in Biochemistry. They are very different, but I've always been interested in both. I am always curious to learn something new and to understand how things work.

As a second-year law student, I joined YHC Lawyers as an Administrative Assistant because I wanted to gain experience in the legal profession. Since I don't have any family or friends in the legal profession, I was keen to see what working in a law firm was actually like.

Starting in the administrative position gave me a really good foundation, so when I moved into a Paralegal role it was a much easier transition.

One thing that surprised me was how much contact we have with clients. Working in Wills and Estates, you see a very personal side of the law.

One of the things I appreciate most about working at YHC Lawyers is that you are always encouraged to ask questions. I like understanding why things are done a certain way, and Shen is always happy to explain how something is meant to be done and why it matters. I've learnt a lot from that.

I also really like our quarterly meetings. Everyone has the opportunity to give feedback about how the workplace is going and suggest ways we can improve our processes. I like that everyone's ideas are listened to and considered.

I feel very lucky that YHC Lawyers is my first job in the legal profession. It's been a really valuable experience so far, and I'm glad I applied early in my law school career.

We were delighted to be invited by The University of Queensland and the Alumni Friends Leadership Board to present at their recent seminar, Thinking Ahead: Estate Planning in a Changing World.

Our Director, Loan Chow, delivered the keynote address on effective estate planning, covering topics including Wills, Testamentary Discretionary Trusts, documenting family gifts and loan arrangements, Enduring Powers of Attorney and Advance Health Directives.

One of the key messages was that estate planning isn't a one-off exercise. Regularly reviewing your estate plan helps ensure it continues to reflect changes in your financial circumstances, family dynamics and the law.

Thank you to Dr Peter Clark Ryan OAM for opening the seminar, and to Nina Mullins, Liesel Houghton, the Alumni Friends Leadership Board and The University of Queensland for the invitation and for hosting such a wonderful event.

Feedback like this means a great deal to our team, particularly because estate administration often involves guiding executors and families through a difficult and emotional process over many months.

FAQ: What is a TDT Will?

Answer: TDT stands for Testamentary Discretionary Trust.

"Testamentary" because the trust is established inside a Will.

"Discretionary" because the trustee has discretion to allocate income and capital among certain beneficiaries.

"Trust" because the inheritance is held on trust for the beneficiaries (and sometimes the Willmaker's descendents).

TDT Wills are commonly used to protect beneficiaries who:
• are in occupations which expose them to personal liability;
• may be at risk of a relationship breakdown;
• have special needs or vulnerabilities; or
• have a history of poor financial management.

A TDT Will allows assets to be managed by a trustee, who can make appropriate decisions about how funds are applied for the benefit of the beneficiaries.

This structure can help support the financial security and educational needs of your children and grandchildren well beyond your lifetime.
