The last appeal from Queensland to the Privy Council
Presented by Sandy Thompson KC

Thursday 18 June
5.15 for 5.30pm
Banco Court, Level 3, QEII Courts of Law, Brisbane

Prior to the enactment of the Australia Act 1986 (Cth) and the Australia Act 1986 (UK), some Queensland court matters were appealed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council for final determination. What were hearings like in this forum before this avenue of appeal was abolished?

In this lecture, Sandy Thompson KC will share his experiences appearing as counsel in 1985 and 1986, the latter (Coast Securities No. 9 Pty Ltd v Bondoukou Pty Ltd) being the last Queensland appeal to Her Majesty in Council. He will also trace the legislative history of appeals to the Privy Council and their eventual abolition in 1986.

Register to attend this free event and stay for refreshments and networking in the Portrait Gallery, or register for the livestream:

QUTLS is excited to partner with Corrs Chambers Westgarth to launch the inaugural Corrs x QUTLS Mentorship Program.

This program is designed to give early law students the opportunity to connect directly with junior lawyers at Corrs and gain insight into the realities of legal practice beyond the classroom.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
• attend a launch event at Corrs
• be matched with a junior lawyer mentor
• gain insight into clerkships, graduate pathways, and commercial practice
• build meaningful industry connections through ongoing monthly catch-ups

Whether you are still exploring different areas of law or simply looking to build your confidence and industry knowledge, this program is a unique opportunity to learn from practitioners who have recently navigated the same transition from university into practice.

Applications close: 29 May 2026.

Apply through this link: https://forms.gle/nrqjQ9okfsNikFU56

Please note that places in the program are limited due to mentor availability. Applications will be assessed based on eligibility and order of submission, with remaining interested students placed on a waitlist should further positions become available.

QUTLS and QUT Law would like to express our sincere gratitude to all of our incredible sponsors and participants for the 2026 LawRight Legal Walk.

Although the event was rained out this year, the willingness of our participants to wake up early and walk 5km to support such an important cause did not go unnoticed. We are also incredibly grateful to our sponsors, whose generous support helped us exceed our fundraising goal.

We’re excited to share that our QUT Law team raised $3,891.38 to help provide access to justice for disadvantaged and marginalised Queenslanders. Every contribution, big or small, helps make a real difference.

Thank you for supporting us and helping LawRight continue its important work in the community.

We look forward to seeing what next year will bring!
