This August, our Birth Trauma Law team took part in the Red, Set, Go challenge and stepped it up to raise funds for Red Nose Australia.

The Red Nose charity provides support to help fund vital research to save little lives and support affected families.

Our team specialises in working with families impacted by birth complications or loss, and we are committed to improving outcomes and access to justice for those affected.

Taking part in this challenge was a meaningful reminder of why we do what we do while bringing awareness and support to families who have lost a baby or child.

Recently, our team had the privilege of visiting the Hudson Institute of Medical Research to meet some of the incredible researchers and scientists dedicated to improving health outcomes for women.

We were inspired to learn about pioneering research for pelvic organ prolapse, a condition affecting 1 in 4 women. Following the challenges and, in some cases, devastating consequences associated with mesh-based implants, researchers are now exploring innovative technologies, including 3D printing, nanotechnology and cellular bioprinting, to develop safer, more effective treatments for women requiring pelvic reconstructive surgery.

We also had the opportunity to hear from Dr Maree Bilandzic and her team about their groundbreaking ovarian cancer research. Ovarian cancer is one of the deadliest cancers affecting women, with around 1,500 Australian women diagnosed each year and only 48% surviving beyond five years. Despite this, treatment has changed very little in the past 30 years, there are more than 30 different subtypes, and there is currently no effective early detection test. The team's research into a novel antibody therapy is now progressing towards first-in-human clinical trials, offering real hope for women diagnosed with this devastating disease.

Earlier this year, we were proud to support this important work through our Bake Sale fundraiser, raising funds for the Hudson Institute's ovarian cancer research.

A heartfelt thank you to Connie and the entire Hudson Institute team for welcoming us and providing such an inspiring tour of your facilities. We look forward to continuing to work together to support research, raise awareness and improve outcomes for women.

Together, research, collaboration and advocacy can change lives.

As we wrap up this year's Birth Trauma Awareness week ("the Cost of Birth Trauma"), we are mindful of the enormous impacts that cannot be financially measured. A conversation we want to continue after our discussion with Rochelle Evrard yesterday.

They are the lives that are lost. The babies who never come home. The mothers whose lives are forever changed or tragically cut short. The families left navigating unimaginable grief.

They are the years of chronic pain, the relationships impacted, the careers put on hold, and the moments of motherhood that look very different to what was hoped for. They are the birthdays, milestones and memories that can never be reclaimed.

While we can estimate the economic burden of birth trauma, there are costs that no report, statistic or dollar figure will ever truly capture.

The emotional toll. The loss of trust. The lifelong physical injuries. The invisible psychological scars. The impact on partners, siblings and entire families.

Behind every number is a person. Behind every statistic is a story.

As we work towards improving maternity care, let's remember that the true cost of birth trauma extends far beyond what can be measured. It is reflected in the lives forever changed, the futures rewritten, and the importance of ensuring every family receives safe, respectful and compassionate care.

This week, for Birth Trauma Awareness Week, our team at McInnes Wilson Lawyers | Birth Trauma Law came together for a special morning tea and discussion centred on the importance of listening, learning and advocating for families affected by birth trauma.

We were privileged to hear from Rochelle Evrard, who courageously shared her lived experience following the devastating loss of her daughter, Milli, after her birth. Rochelle’s honesty, strength and generosity in sharing her story reminded us why trauma-informed care and communication matter so deeply.

Our discussion explored not only the significant financial cost of birth trauma, but also the lifelong emotional impact experienced by mothers, babies and families. Behind every statistic is a family whose life has been changed forever.

Thank you, Rochelle, for trusting us with your story and for helping us continue to learn how we can better support those affected by birth trauma.

To mark Birth Trauma Awareness Week for 2026, Birth Trauma Australia released a report on the costs of birth trauma to the Australian economy - estimated at $17.5 billion for FY23/24.

Far more than the impact to the healthcare system, the cost to individuals is staggering, both financially and psychologically.
