Elizabeth Shearer has completed her term as Queensland Law Society President, and we are pleased to welcome her back to our practice.

After a very busy year leading the solicitors' branch of the legal profession in Queensland, Elizabeth is looking forward to returning to client work.

It's 10 years since Elizabeth established Affording Justice, and it remains a unique and innovative part of providing access to justice.

We get a number of queries from people concerned about what someone else has said about them. Increasingly the concern relates to posts on Facebook.

It's an unfortunate sign of the times, but we seem to be getting more queries from people being made redundant from their jobs. If a redundancy is not genuine, it can amount to unfair dismissal. Read more at http://affordingjustice.com.au/redundancy-genuine/

Affording Justice is featured in the new report from the Centre for Innovative Justice at RMIT. Our practice is given as an example of an innovation to fill the access to justice gap - that is help for people who are not poor enough to get legal aid, but not rich enough to be able to afford traditional legal services. We are delighted to have our work recognised in this way.

A new survey about the legal needs of people in Australia was published today by the Law and Justice Foundation of New South Wales. It finds that almost half of all Australians experience a legal problem in each year, and about a quarter of us experience a substantial legal problem.

These problems were associated with financial strain, stress related illnesses, physical ill health, relationship breakdown and even having to move home.

The survey shows that while people seek help, they don't necessarily ask a lawyer.

At Affording Justice we try to make asking a lawyer and getting legal help as accessible as possible, so that people can use the law to solve problems before they have those negative consequences. If you need help with a legal problem, get in touch.
