New Years resolutions for business owners 🎉

Follow ➡ ⠀⠀
Follow ➡ ⠀

You may not have been able to meet many of the goals set for your business in 2021 (or 2020 for that matter) due to the ever changing nature of the world we live in at the moment. However, there are still ways to get back on track and prepare for a better 2022.

Not sure what resolutions should make their way onto your list? Here are a few I think all business owners should consider.

📑 Update your business plan

I’m willing to bet that your business has changed since you first wrote your business plan. Now is a great time to revisit it and update that plan with your latest financials, goals, competitor research, marketing ideas, and more so your business will continue to grow in 2022.

🤝 Expand your network

If you make an effort to make a new connection once a week or month, you will improve the odds of you finding a new business lead, learning something new and/or creating a strong professional relationship. The more you network, the more results you’ll see.

💻 Look to automate what you can

Technology makes our lives easier every day, but are you using it to its full potential for your business? Look for areas of your business that you can automate. Not only does this cut down on the chance of manual errors, but it also frees up time in your schedule to tackle other important tasks.

🏛 Talk to your lawyer and accountant more

If you or your business don’t already have a lawyer or accountant, make 2022 the year that you change that. From ensuring you are structured and protected legally in all your business dealings to ensuring you are on top of your finances and solvent, Lawyers and accountants add immense value to a business.

⁣have you ever received a message that left you scratching your head? 🤷🏼‍♂️ It’s simple: If you want to avoid confusion, pick up the phone📞

Why I call my clients to obtain instructions, provide updates and deliver good and, more importantly, bad news.⠀

📧 Email, text, and other methods of communication are great, and each have their place, but nothing beats picking up the phone and having a chat with your clients, business partners and colleagues.⠀

Texting and emailing seems to be the main method of communication for most professionals and fewer people feel comfortable speaking on the phone with their clients. ⠀

🤷‍♀️ However, in my experience, even the clearest and simplest texts and emails can lead to confusion with and that is why I typically call or invite a call after sending a message to ensure it is interpreted correctly and clarify any concerns the client may have.⠀

In the absence of body language, tone of voice or the good old fashioned “vibe” of a conversation, we have very little to help us interpret a message. Without these cues, people will endeavour to fill in the blanks (often with our own worries and assumptions).⠀

If the client is feeling criticised, then they will read criticism into the message even where it may not have been the intention of the writer.⠀

Further, the relationship we have with the person who sends us a message (including our own thoughts and feelings about them) also informs the way we fill in the blanks in their communication.⠀

In short, words alone can be interpreted in an almost infinite number of ways.⠀

To avoid confusion - pick up the phone❗⠀

Let me know in the comments if you prefer to text, email or call your clients and how you try to avoid confusion in your correspondence.

The reasons for hiring an accountant are obvious - you will need someone to help you set up your "chart of accounts," review your numbers periodically, and prepare all of your taxes.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
The reason for hiring a business lawyer may not, however, be so apparent. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
A good business lawyer will provide vital assistance in almost every aspect of your business including:⠀⠀
⠀⠀
🏭 basic structuring;⠀⠀
📝 ongoing advice;⠀⠀
📁 formal business incorporation;⠀⠀
📑 lease and supplier negotiation;⠀⠀
💰 ensuring you stay on top of your debtors;⠀⠀
👨‍⚖️ defending and bringing lawsuits; and ⠀⠀
💼 handling your businesses liability. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
If you are wanting to start a business and would like a lawyer to assist you not only at the outset but on an ongoing basis, feel free to contact me to arrange a no-cost, no-obligation consultation.⠀⠀

Leaving behind the comfort and security of a regular job with a reliable paycheck can be daunting⠀

While there is no denying that being self-employed has its challenges, if you feel that you have a great idea, are persistent, determined and resourceful, then being self-employed offers you a lifestyle you may never be able to achieve as an employee⠀

Here’s some of the benefits I have found from stepping out of your comfort zone & becoming self-employed⠀

🙏🏼 You control your life⠀

As an employee, however, your life is ultimately in the hands of your employer (i.e. when you work, where you work, who you work with/for, your income etc.). Being self-employed means your destiny is in your own hands

⏰ You choose your own hours⠀

Rather than having set hours, you can start as early or late as you want. While this can provide you with flexibility, you must also be disciplined in order to run a successful business⠀

🤝 You get to work with people you like⠀

You can make the decisions on who to hire and fire & can build a team aligned to your personality & goals. Not only that, but you also decide who you want to work for, who your clients are & what projects bring you the most satisfaction

🎢 You get to live a varied life⠀

Instead of arriving & leaving at the same time each day, doing the same thing over & over - being self-employed is often like being on a roller coaster. No day is ever the same. You’ll get used to dealing with orders, accounts, clients, complaints, celebrations & disappointments all in the course of your working days⠀

If you find yourself dreaming of running your own business and of making a difference, you should not let anything stand in your way - It’s a journey worth taking⠀

If you are looking to start your own business feel free to contact me for a no-cost, no-obligation consultation either in person, on the phone or via zoom⠀

⁣Family time is one of the most important things & we ought to make more time for it, after all “You have a lifetime to work, but children are only young once” - Polish Proverb 🚼⠀

It is a common misconception that a business owners family gets the benefit of them being their own boss or that there is a higher income & more flexibility that comes from that position that somehow benefits the family unit.⠀

🌪 However, the truth is that a business owners life can sometimes be a whirlwind with long hours, lots of risk, pressure & uncertainty, with most of their time & energy spent devoted to the company - even in the best of times. ⠀

Many successful entrepreneurs agree that if they had not had the support of their families, they may not have gotten through the dire times. ⠀

This highlights the importance of family for any successful entrepreneur. For this reason, we should all take steps to work on our family & their happiness.⠀

☀ So over the weekend I left the city & went to go spend time with my family down the Gold Coast - something I don’t do as often as I should. ⠀

Spending time with my family and in particular my nephew, watching him run & play in the park & then admire Uncle Kyle’s “spaceship” left me feeling refreshed, recharged & ready to take on the challenges of the week.⠀

💬 Let me know how you prioritise and incorporate your family time into your schedule in the comments below.

⁣Benefits Of Nature On Mental Health & Productivity 🌲🪴 ⠀

🦠 As COVID cases led to more restrictions, many businesses/employees/sole traders struggled with the lockdowns, social isolation, school closings & remote work that was forced upon us⠀

As a result, we saw an increase in mental health challenges & hampered happiness, well-being & productivity⠀

It should come as no surprise that the incidences of burnout & mental health problems have risen drastically during the pandemic as workers spent substantial amounts of time inside, often alone, working remotely in front of their computers, tied to their social media devices, isolated indoors at their makeshift workstations⠀

🤷🏼‍♂️ So how can we combat these negative side effects?⠀

Switching off your devices and getting outdoors has been found to bring us higher emotional well-being and happiness & helps mitigate the deleterious effects of loneliness which may come as a result of social distancing & other pandemic restrictions (quarantine and lockdown)⠀

A study found that spending a minimum of 2⃣ hours a week in nature (such as parks, woodlands or beaches) promotes physical & mental health and well-being & gives you greater perspective of your life circumstances⠀

In the study, those who spent 2 hours per week had better health and higher psychological well-being than the ones who didn’t spend any time in nature or those who spent less than 1 hour per week⠀

Also, it doesn’t seem to matter what activity you’re involved in, as long as you’re outdoors: sailing, biking, kayaking, walking or tennis ⛵ 🚴 🚣🏽‍♂️🚶‍♀️🎾⠀

As the days get shorter & colder, you might not be able to get outside as much during winter months - but don’t worry because studies have shown that having a green window view is linked to higher self-esteem, life satisfaction & happiness as well as lower incidences of depression, anxiety & loneliness⠀

💬 How many hours do you spend out in nature? Also, if you have any hiking recommendations, let me know in the comments ⬇

⠀⠀
1⃣ Be proactive - The longer you wait, the worse the problem will become. While ignorance is bliss, it does not solve the problem.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
2⃣ Stay on top of your numbers - Regularly review your cashflow, income vs expenses and other financials to understand what’s going on, identify trends so that you are able to find solutions to those problems ASAP.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
3⃣ Try to get paid sooner - By putting processes in place, you can ensure that your invoices get paid on time meaning that you are able to pay your invoices on time as well.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
4⃣ Negotiate with your creditors - ⠀⠀
Whether it’s a payment plan with a supplier or the ATO or rent relief from your landlord, opening the lines of communication with your creditors can help you get some relief, result in you potentially paying less on the total debt, interest and get your cashflow back on track.⠀⠀
⠀⠀
5⃣ Speak to the experts - Your accountant, financial advisor or lawyer will be able to give you the advice you need to improve your financial position. Getting expert assistance ensures that you are aware of your options and are able to make informed decisions.⠀⠀

Don’t stick your head in the sand!⠀

Networking is a great way to generate business leads, find a new business partner or land a new customer/client

Here are some strategies you can implement to successfully network with other businesses

🏫 Join organisations⠀

Participating in an industry-specific organisation, small business associations, or local chamber of commerce can be beneficial for your business⠀

These groups can connect you to experts and influencers in your industry, offer development opportunities, & help you with resources that can assist your business

🤝 Attend conferences⠀

A conference or event can connect you with many more people in your field

🔁 Cross-promote⠀

A great way to network with another small business is to partner with it. Cross-promoting can get your brand in front of a new audience & strengthen your relationship with the partner business

🙏🏼 Volunteer⠀

Volunteering is a great way to get out in the community and network with people

One way to volunteer is to take a seat on the board of a local nonprofit organisation. Often, these boards are comprised of other business leaders, & having the organisation as a common interest is a great way to break the ice to connect with them⠀

📧 Follow up⠀

There’s more to networking than exchanging business cards and contact details. It’s important to take the time to build those relationships & nurture those connections

Did you want to have a deeper conversation with a particular person? Be sure to make some sort of contact with 48 hours of the first meeting so they don’t forget about you⠀

When you do communicate again, don’t put the focus on yourself. See what you can offer first⠀

It’s entirely up to you to determine how you want to spend your time & money, but if you follow some of these tips, you could get more bang for your buck⠀

Do you have a great networking strategy? Feel free to share it in the comments below
