Principal lawyers from our 13 regional offices converged on Brisbane last week for their annual conference – three days of learning, development, and networking.

We were honoured to have Minister for Youth Justice and Victim Support, Laura Ge**er MP, deliver the keynote address, and to hear from Judge Dennis Lynch KC, of the District Court of Queensland and the Childrens Court of Queensland, who shared valuable insights into the operations of these courts in regional Queensland.

Thank you to all of our presenters, particularly Director of the Family Law Centre, Clarissa Rayward; Legal Aid Queensland Board Chair, Paul de Jersey; our CEO, Nicky Davies; Senior Executive Director Legal Practice, Peter Delibaltas and other senior leaders.

The conference covered topics including artificial intelligence in the law, leadership in legal services, and updates from key practice and corporate areas. A fantastic opportunity for our regional leaders to share strategies and strengthen their work improving justice access across Queensland.

It’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) and this year’s theme, ‘All In,’ encourages us to learn about our shared histories and work together towards reconciliation.

At we’re reflecting on two defining historical moments - the 1967 referendum and the 1992 Mabo decision.

On 27 May 1967, Australians voted to amend the Constitution to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census and to empower the Commonwealth to make laws for First Nations peoples. Mabo Day, 3 June, commemorates the 1992 High Court decision recognising the Meriam people of the Torres Strait as the traditional owners of their lands.

Both of these decisions were important steps on the journey towards reconciliation.

First Nations people can contact ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander information line on 1300 650 143 for culturally safe legal support.
