Cycling accident? Here's what to do immediately.

We're Queensland cyclists who've seen too many riders lose their legal rights because they didn't know what steps to take after an accident.

Your immediate action checklist:

✓ Seek medical attention - even if injuries seem minor. Adrenaline masks pain and some injuries show up later.
✓ Report the incident to police - this creates an official record.
✓ Take photos - the scene, your bike damage, road conditions, vehicle details.
✓ Gather witness details - names, phone numbers, ask what they saw.
✓ Take measurements - distances, skid marks, position of vehicles.
✓ Don't negotiate with the other party or their insurer on the spot.
✓ Contact Cycle Law for a free initial consultation.

Common mistakes that hurt claims later:

• Saying "I'm fine" when you're not
• Accepting blame at the scene
• Not documenting the hazard or collision site
• Waiting too long to seek legal advice

Why choose Cycle Law? We're not just legal professionals - we're passionate cyclists.

:
The 5 most common cycling accident claims in Queensland.

As cyclists ourselves, we see these incidents repeatedly. Here's what you need to know:

1. Motor vehicle collisions. Most common at intersections and roundabouts. Usually, driver inattention or failure to give way. Claim via CTP insurance.
2. Hazardous Road Conditions Potholes, debris, poorly constructed bike paths. Can lead to claims against councils or road authorities. Public liability claim.
3. Hit and run incidents with a driver fleeing the scene. You can still claim through Queensland's Nominal Defendant scheme via CTP.
4. Dooring incidents where a car door opens onto a cyclist's path in urban areas. CTP claim against driver or vehicle owner.
5. Collisions with pedestrians or other cyclists shared path incidents. Liability depends on circumstances. Public liability claim.

After any accident:

• Seek medical attention (even for minor injuries)
• Report to police
• Take photos and gather witness details
• Contact us for a free initial consultation
• Understanding these scenarios and your legal rights means you can ride with confidence.

At Cycle Law there are no hidden fees and you'll never pay more than you should. Not only that, but we guarantee you will never be charged an uplift fee.

2032 Olympics: What it means for Queensland cyclists.
Brisbane's gearing up to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games and major infrastructure changes are coming - and cyclists need to pay close attention.

The opportunities: Bruce Highway upgrades, Logan to Gold Coast Faster Rail, Coomera Connector and new bus priority corridors. Many of these projects include provisions for active transport - dedicated cycling lanes and green corridors connecting Olympic venues, residential areas, and recreational spaces.

The challenges: Construction of new venues at Southport Arena, Gold Coast Hockey Centre, and the Athletes' Village at Royal Pines will disrupt existing cycling routes. Expect detours, reduced access to popular paths, increased traffic from construction vehicles.

What cycling advocates are calling for:

• Protected bike lanes integrated into new transport corridors
• Continuity of access during construction phases
• Legacy cycling facilities that benefit everyday riders, not just elite athletes
• This is a once-in-a-generation chance to reshape Queensland's infrastructure, but only if cyclists are included in the planning.

Have construction projects already affected your regular cycling routes? Let us know where and how.

A bicycle storage area (or “bike box”) is a marked section of road at signalised intersections where cyclists can wait ahead of vehicles during a red light.

These areas aim to:
• Improve cyclist visibility
• Reduce conflict at intersections
• Allow cyclists a safer head start when the light turns green

Bike boxes are part of Queensland’s road design to support shared road use.

• The manoeuvre is completed within 50 metres

It’s not always just about paint markings. Here are some indicators that a lane is legally designated for bicycle use:

- A white bicycle symbol with the word “LANE”
- Green-painted sections at intersections
- Road signs restricting access to cyclists only
- Yellow shared lane markings (cyclists are legally allowed to use the full lane)

If you see these, treat the space as reserved for cyclists unless otherwise permitted.
