Australia’s 2026–27 migration program has reduced permanent regional visa planning levels significantly — but that doesn’t necessarily mean fewer people can apply for the Subclass 491 visa.

Our latest blog breaks down what’s really changing, why invitation numbers may remain similar, and what applicants should actually be paying attention to heading into the new financial year.

We also explain how reduced planning levels could impact 491 processing times and State nomination opportunities moving forward.

Make sure your EOI is up to date.

The next SkillSelect invitation round for the Subclass 189 visa is scheduled for June 4, 2026 — and it’s the final round for the 2025–26 financial year.

Before invitations go out, it’s important to check:
✔️ Your skills assessment is still valid
✔️ Your English test hasn’t expired
✔️ Partner points and relationship details are current
✔️ Your employment history is accurate
✔️ You have documents ready to support every claim in your EOI

If your EOI contains incorrect or outdated information, it could impact your ability to lodge a successful visa application.

At AVIE, we can help review, prepare, and lodge a fully supported EOI, as well as advise on ways to improve your points or explore alternative visa pathways.

Did you know “regional Australia” is much bigger than most people think?

Under the 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa, businesses located outside metro Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane may be able to sponsor overseas workers across a range of occupations.

Some eligible occupations include:
✔️ Hair or Beauty Salon Manager
✔️ Pet Groomer
✔️ Personal Assistant
✔️ Library Technician
✔️ University Tutor
✔️ Retirement Village Manager
✔️ Training and Development Professional
…and more.

For skilled workers, the 494 visa can provide a pathway to live and work in Australia while building toward permanent residency.

For employers, it may offer access to skilled talent in areas experiencing ongoing workforce shortages.

Big update for employers and skilled workers 👀

Several occupations are now eligible for sponsorship through the standard 482 Skills in Demand visa program under the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) — without needing a DAMA or Labour Agreement.

Some of the occupations include:
✔️ Cyber Security Analyst
✔️ DevOps Engineer
✔️ Content Creator (Marketing)
✔️ Supply Chain Analyst
✔️ Arborist
✔️ Furniture Maker
✔️ Tour Guide
✔️ Zoologist
…and more.

This could create new sponsorship opportunities for businesses struggling to fill skilled roles and overseas workers looking for pathways into Australia.

But occupation eligibility is only one part of the process. Sponsorship requirements, salary thresholds, skills, and role alignment still matter.

Important update for FNQ DAMA employers and businesses planning sponsorship applications ⚠️

The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT), now also referred to as the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT) for relevant visa programs, is expected to increase again from 1 July 2026.

While the updated figure has not yet been announced, employers with proposed salaries currently sitting near the existing threshold — including FNQ DAMA concession thresholds — should start planning now.

Key reminder:
📅 Endorsement requests relying on the current threshold levels should be submitted to the Cairns Chamber of Commerce by COB 15 June 2026.

After this date, there may not be enough time for assessment before the new indexed thresholds take effect.

This is especially important for:
✔️ New labour agreements
✔️ DAMA variation requests
✔️ Upcoming nomination applications

Variation requests can also take significantly longer, as businesses must wait for the Department to execute the variation and update nomination ceilings before nominations can be lodged.

This update reinforces why proactive workforce planning under DAMA is becoming more important than ever.

We recently updated our article explaining why forward planning matters for DAMA businesses, including recent changes around labour agreement variations and long-term workforce strategy.

Applying for an Australian student visa is an exciting step but preparation is everything.

A strong application isn’t just about getting accepted into a course, it’s about making sure every requirement is met, every document is correct, and every detail is consistent from the start.

Here are 5 key things to keep in mind:

✔ Check all visa requirements early
Make sure you have a valid passport, an offer from an Australian institution, financial proof, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

✔ Prepare your documents in advance
You’ll need your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), English test results (if required), bank statements or scholarship evidence, and health insurance.

✔ Understand your visa conditions
This includes attending classes, maintaining satisfactory progress, and following work limitations (usually up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods).

✔ Apply early
Processing can take weeks or even months — leaving it too late can delay your course start date.

✔ Get help if you need it
Small mistakes can lead to delays or refusals, so professional guidance can make a big difference.
