🇦🇺 IMPORTANT: Major Student Visa Changes from 2 October 2026

The Australian Government has introduced new rules affecting Student Visa (Subclass 500) and Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) applications made in Australia.

🔹 Student visa applications in Australia
Most temporary visa holders will no longer be able to apply for a Student Visa while in Australia. If affected, you will generally need to be outside Australia when applying and when the visa is granted.

🔹 Further Student Visa applications
Current Student Visa holders may also be affected when applying for another Student Visa, unless they meet an exemption.

🔹 Family members / dependants
Student visa applicants can generally no longer include partners or dependent children in their application, unless an exemption applies.

Current Student Visa holders also cannot add family members as subsequent entrants after their visa has been granted.

✅ Some exemptions apply, including certain:
• PhD students
• DFAT or Defence-sponsored students
• Foreign government scholarship recipients
• Eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries

📌 Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 will continue to be assessed under the rules that applied when they were lodged.

⚠️ If you are planning to study in Australia, change your course, bring your family, or apply for another Student Visa, make sure you understand the new requirements before making travel or enrolment plans.

🚨 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗔𝗡𝗧 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘: 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗧𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 🇦🇺

From 𝟮 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, new rules will apply to international students who want to change their education provider.

📌 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱?

✅ 𝗨𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝟯𝟬 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳: Students will generally need to complete at least 𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 of their principal/main course before transferring to another education provider.

🔄 Previously, the requirement was generally 𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀.

📅 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭 𝗝𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳: The requirement is expected to return to 𝟲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀.

⚠️ 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁: If you started your course between 6 and 12 months ago, you may now need to wait until you reach the 𝟭𝟮-𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱 before transferring.

𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗳:

• Your current education provider agrees to release you
• Your provider or course is no longer registered
• You have written support from your government sponsor

🔹 New ACT Migration Application Portal
The new ACT Migration Application Portal is now open for:

RCB Support applications
Canberra Matrix submissions

🔹 2026–27 Nomination Allocations
The ACT’s 2026–27 nomination allocation has not yet been confirmed by the Australian Government. Further information will be published once the allocation is officially confirmed.

🔹 First Invitation Round – 2026–27
The first ACT invitation round for the 2026–27 financial year is scheduled to take place during the week commencing 12 October 2026.

🔹 National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)
