Last year, nearly 43,000 children and young people presented alone to specialist homelessness services. One in ten were under 14 years old, and 40% of Australia’s homeless population is under 25.

Young people experience homelessness for many reasons, but the majority have been exposed to domestic and family violence.

No private rental properties are affordable for young people relying on Youth Allowance, and youth homelessness services can’t keep up with the demand for beds. Half those looking for a bed are turned away due to a lack of resources.

Funding to provide the wrap around services necessary to support young people and to help them thrive must increase in line with inflation and the spiralling costs of service provision.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day is today, Wednesday, April 15. Show your support by sharing messages and content, hosting and attending YHMD events, donating to services and advocating to end child and youth homelessness.

Let’s work together to end youth homelessness.

Right now, there are more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in prison than ever before.

From coast to coast across Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are being criminalised and imprisoned at alarming rates.

This is happening because state and territory governments are more concerned with political point-scoring than evidence-based reforms.

Locking up kids is an express ticket to a life of crime and suffering. Throwing a child in prison increases the likelihood they will have ongoing contact with the criminal justice system – which only harms our communities.

That’s why we – alongside more than 200 organisations and leaders – have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, calling on him to act.

Australia is falling short of respecting and protecting human rights. Overnight 120+ countries called on the Albanese Government to better protect the rights of First Nations people, children, and refugees, implement a national Human Rights Act, and tackle the gender-based violence epidemic at a major United Nations human rights review.

Key recommendations include calls to to at least 14, and to implement an Australian Human Rights Act.

The review validates 170+ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, human rights, legal, disability, refugee, LGBTIQA+ and climate organisations, who submitted a joint report to the UN in July 2025.

Spreading Christmas Cheer in Logan! 🎄

Each year, the Logan District Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders distribute Christmas hampers to local families facing a tough holiday season, and this festive season is no exception. Thanks to the generous donation of fresh fruit and vegetables from Earth Markets, this cherished tradition continues to bring joy and help make the festive season brighter for the community.

YFS Legal acknowledges and celebrates the Logan Elders for their unwavering dedication year after year, spreading kindness and support throughout the festive season. 🌟

It’s Human Rights Week! 🌏 From 3–10 December, we celebrate the rights that unite us and reflect on how we can protect them in our daily lives.

The Queensland Human Rights Commission's theme this year is ‘Our Rights, Our Responsibility,’ which reminds us that human rights belong to everyone - and it’s up to all of us to protect and respect them every day. We all have a role to play in building a culture of respect and equality.

At YFS Legal, we stand with our community to promote awareness and empower action that strengthens our human rights culture. Together, we can make a difference.

A huge thank you to our amazing UQ Pro Bono Centre law students for their hard work and dedication to our Documents Clinic this semester! 👏

Throughout the clinic, we were able to support clients with a wide range of matters, including divorce applications, parenting plans, applications to vary domestic violence orders, enduring powers of attorney, Legal Aid applications, Victims Assist applications, and letters of demand. It’s been a highly productive and rewarding semester for the clinic, with the students gaining valuable experience while supporting our community.

Our clinic has now wrapped up for the year as the university students finish their studies. We expect to recommence around March next year, once the new university semester begins. We'll share more details closer to the date.

In the meantime, we will continue to offer free legal advice appointments. To book an appointment, please call, send an email or fill in the enquiry form on our website:

25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. On this day it's important we pause, reflect and stand against all forms of violence experienced by women and girls.

1 in 3 women, worldwide, have experienced physical or sexual violence - mostly by an intimate partner. When accounting for sexual harassment, this figure is even higher. 137 women are killed by a member of their family every day. 39% of Australian women have experienced some form of sexual harassment in the workplace. First Nations women are 32 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence and 11 times more likely to die from assault than non-Indigenous women.

These are not just statistics - they represent much loved women in our lives. We all have a role to play in building safer futures for our women and communities.

We were honoured to attend Youth Advocacy Centre's launch of their Reconciliation Action Plan earlier this week.

The event was a celebration of First Nations culture, community, and commitment to reconciliation.

Congratulations to YAC on this significant milestone. We look forward to continuing to work together as we take meaningful steps toward reconciliation.
