NSW Families: Who is really in charge of your Will? 🧐

Planning for the future can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to making a Will.

A story recently went viral involving a son who lost $56,000 of his inheritance —all because of a "free" will his mother signed 12 years ago. She wanted to protect him, but the fine print did the opposite.

It is important that your Will is written by an experienced legal professional, so it is up to date, legally binding, and protects both your estate and loved ones.

If it’s been more than 5 years since you looked at your Will, give us a call. A conversation with one of our wills and estates team could save your family and ensure your wishes are taken care of. 🤝

History Spotlight!

Did you know that 7 May 1815 marks a massive milestone in Australian history? On this day, Governor Lachlan Macquarie formally proclaimed Bathurst, making it the oldest inland British settlement in Australia! 🏔️

But the story starts long before 1815. This beautiful region is the traditional home of the Wiradjuri people, who have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years.

💡 Fast Facts:
The Name: While Macquarie named the town after the Earl of Bathurst, the Wiradjuri people know the Macquarie River and the surrounding area as Wambool, meaning "winding river." 🌊

A Land of Plenty: The area was often described as 'dalman'—a place of incredible abundance and plenty. 🌾

The Gateway: As the first town established west of the Blue Mountains, Bathurst became the historic gateway to the Australian inland.

Today, we acknowledge the complex history of this land and celebrate the enduring connection of the Wiradjuri people to the Bathurst plains

Whilst May the 4th be with you, here's a fun fact about Jedi Religion.

In the 2001 Census, over 73,000 Australians listed their religion as "Jedi."

Not a typo. Seventy-three thousand. That's more than the entire population of Bathurst — deciding that the Australian Census was the appropriate place to declare allegiance to the Force. 🌌⚔️

Somewhere, a very serious Commonwealth Statistician had to write the words "Jedi Knight" in an official government document, and we giggle about that often.

Those trees at the Bathurst Showground? They were the law.

As the Royal Bathurst Show rolls around again this week, here's something most people walk straight past without knowing.

When the Bathurst Agricultural, Horticultural & Pastoral Association was granted the Showground land back in the 1870s, the planting of trees wasn't just a nice idea — it was a condition of the original land grant. Built right into the title. The committee took it so seriously they paid an architect, Edward Gell, £50 to advise on the plantings.

Property conditions and covenants attached to land don't disappear with time. They travel with the title — sometimes for generations. It's something we deal with every day at Kenny Spring Solicitors, helping people in Bathurst and across the Central West understand exactly what comes with the land they own.

Enjoy the Show this week, Bathurst. 🌳

This ANZAC Day, as the bells of the Bathurst War Memorial Carillon ring out across King's Parade, it's worth pausing to reflect on how this remarkable memorial came to be.

Chosen in August 1926 as the most appropriate form of tribute, the Carillon was built through a decade of community effort — carnivals, market days, a Carillon Belle Competition, concerts, dances, a penny drive, a Buy-a-Brick campaign, and Back to Bathurst Week — all through the difficult years of the Great Depression.

Built from 212,000 local red bricks, the last brick was laid on 24 April 1933 — the day before ANZAC Day. A community built something permanent to say: we will not forget.

Lest We Forget. 🌿

Laws You Didn't Know Existed!

In Queensland, it is illegal to keep a pet rabbit.
Unless you are a magician. We are not kidding — magicians can apply for an exemption.

The Biosecurity Act 2014 (QLD) classifies rabbits as a restricted biosecurity matter given the catastrophic impact feral rabbit populations have had on Australian agriculture and ecosystems since colonisation.

The fine for keeping an unauthorised rabbit? Up to $66,000
Somewhere in Queensland right now, a child is asking for a bunny for their birthday and a parent is quietly grateful for this law. 🪄

🏇 A High-Stakes Shower?

Throwback to 2014, when the Bathurst Showground made headlines for all the wrong reasons. A sprinkler system—controlled all the way from Brisbane—decided to join the race mid-turn, drenching jockeys and horses in the home straight! 💦

The legal fallout saw licenses suspended and questions raised about "remote negligence."

If you’re heading to the Bathurst Heritage Trades Trail this weekend, don’t worry—The Showground Pavilion built in the 1890's should keep you dry as you delve into a weekend of local history!

Did you know NSW has proposed to change the rules around character references in criminal sentencing?

New guidelines propose to restrict how courts can consider testimonials from employers, community leaders and family members — particularly in serious criminal matters. The changes are designed to level the playing field, but they also mean defendants may no longer rely on references the same way they once could.

If you or someone you know is facing court, the way your case is presented matters more than ever. Evidence of rehabilitation, program participation and personal circumstances needs to be structured carefully to carry weight.

Our team at Kenny Spring Solicitors can help you understand your options and build the strongest possible case.
