🚨 Planning to go to Australia? Read this first! 🇦🇺 Visa rules are changing, and some pathways that used to be possible may not be as straightforward as before.
Tony Burke, Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs, has announced a new direction for the migration system, with a particular focus on reducing “Visa Hopping” and the use of temporary visas to extend stays in Australia.
What’s changing?
✈️ Visitor Visa
There are plans to introduce stricter No Further Stay conditions for visitor visas granted in the future.
🎓 Student Visa
Stricter measures are being considered around changing courses or visas to extend your stay, as well as bringing family members in certain circumstances.
🎒 Working Holiday
Year 2 will have a maximum of 45,000 places, while Year 3 will have 5,000 places, with a Ballot system and Regional work requirements.
👷 Skilled Migration
There will be a greater focus on occupations Australia needs, such as Construction, Healthcare, Agriculture & Fisheries, and Education.
❤️ Partner Visa
This area needs to be watched closely, particularly regarding the potential impact of the No Further Stay condition. However, it is still too early to say that “you can no longer apply for a Partner Visa onshore.”
🚨 Overstay / Compliance
The government plans to add another 100 Compliance officers and increase Detention capacity by a further 250 places.
📉 Net Overseas Migration
The government is targeting approximately 245,000 people this financial year and 225,000 people in the following financial year.
But there’s one important thing to keep in mind.
The announcements made so far outline the government’s proposed direction and measures. Many details still need to be confirmed, including when the changes will take effect and what exemptions may apply.
So, if you’re planning to apply for a visa, don’t change your plans based on the headline alone. Make sure you understand how the changes may apply to your individual circumstances. 🇦🇺
