More good news for those looking to migrate to Australia as the Department of Home Affairs increases the migrant cap from 160,000 to 195,000 places for this years program. They have also committed $36 million to help clear the visa processing back log.

The role of migration policy in tackling worker shortages will be the focus on the second and final day of the Jobs and Skills Summit, after the government announced it will lift the migration cap to 195,000 a year.

South Australia state sponsorship program to open on 25th August. To help address South Australia’s urgent skills shortages, the General Skilled Migration (GSM) program will be opening to over 500 occupations on Thursday 25 August 2022 . All information and requirements for South Australian nomination will be available on the migration.sa.gov.au website from Thursday 25 August 2022.

Some good news for the 2022/23 Migration Program starting on 1 July 2022. The numbers are back at pre-pandemic levels. Hopefully this will translate into more invitations and visa grants. Finally things should start moving again after 16th November.

The federal government is increasing its regional migration program intake from 23,000 to 25,000 after a strong start to the initiative this financial year.

Interesting article published today. The department state that the drop is due to 'toughened integrity measures' but the fact is that they dramatically lowered the invites for the SC189 and family sponsored SC489 visa from 31,827 in the 2016/2017 financial year to 16,296 in the 2017/2018 financial year. I would say that this almost 50% drop in invites has a lot to do with the drop in numbers but for some reason the department do not acknowledge this.

Australia's permanent migrant intake has dropped by more than 10 per cent due to tougher vetting rules imposed by the federal government.

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) have announced that from 1 July 2018 the points pass and pool mark for the SC189/190 and 489 visas will be raised from 60 to 65. As the invite mark for the SC189 is currently 75 this will not impact that visa sub class but it will make it a bit harder for the state sponsored visas (SC190/489). See here for more information:

It seems that the Department have changed the annual migrant intake from a Target to a Cap. Historically the actual number was very close to the target but last year they granted 8,000 less visas than the target and this year it looks like they will fall well short (by as much as 20,000).
