Newtown – then and now

Then: Traditionally a working-class suburb with students, artists, migrants, and lower rents. Many terrace houses were run-down, and it had a strong alternative culture.

What changed: Its proximity to the CBD and university, good transport, and vibrant culture attracted professionals and investors. Homes were renovated, and new businesses moved in.

Now:

- Much higher property prices and rents
- Trendy cafés, bars, boutiques, and galleries
- Fewer low-income residents and students able to afford to live there
