May 9–10: Final Session of the Certificate Course for Armenian Lawyers Concludes

The Arbitration and Mediation Center of Armenia (AMCA), in cooperation with the Center for International Commercial & Investment Arbitration at Columbia Law School, held the final session of the Certificate Course for Armenian Lawyers: Representation in Arbitration Proceedings. 🌍📚

During this concluding module, participants had the opportunity to learn from Jeremy K. Sharpe, Raquel Martinez Sloan, and Dr. Kabir Duggal through highly practical sessions focused on main hearing and post-hearing procedures, as well as the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and judicial assistance.

This final session also marked the successful completion of the 40-hour certificate course, designed to strengthen the professional capacity of Armenian lawyers in arbitration proceedings. Certificates were awarded to the participants in recognition of their commitment and successful completion of the program.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Center for International Commercial & Investment Arbitration at Columbia Law School and the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce for its unwavering support in helping make this initiative a reality and contributing to the development of a truly stronger arbitration community in Armenia.

At the invitation of AMCA’s partner, the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, representatives of the Arbitration and Mediation Center of Armenia (AMCA) participated in the Global Dispute Resolution Symposium held on May 4–8, 2026. ⚖️🌐

The Symposium brought together judges, arbitration institutions and advocates to discuss key developments in dispute resolution. Particular attention was given to the role of judges in case referrals, arbitration proceedings, the recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards, interim measures, mediation processes, and the enforcement of mediated settlements.

The program also provided a valuable platform for comparative discussions on judicial support for ADR, including court approaches to dispute resolution, institutional strategies, referral mechanisms, obligations under the New York Convention and the Singapore Convention, and the importance of judicial training in strengthening ADR practice.

AMCA was represented by Lilit Petrosyan, Norayr Baghdasaryan, Vardan Lablajyan, and Arsen Yengibaryan. The Armenian delegation also included judges and advocates from Armenia, reflecting the country’s growing engagement in advancing alternative dispute resolution. 🇦🇲

The discussions on May 7–8 focused specifically on the role of institutions within the ADR ecosystem, arbitration and mediation case management, and sustainable strategies for the promotion and long-term development of ADR institutions.

The Symposium was held in Istanbul and organized by the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce in partnership with the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC), with the project made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of State.

In 2026, AMCA has already registered 121 national and international mediation cases — including both family and commercial disputes.

🤝 Each case reflects a deliberate choice: to resolve, not escalate.

📊 Already, 61.7% of cases have been concluded — and notably, 36.5% of those concluded have resulted in settlement agreements.

🌍 Moreover, 11 cases registered in 2026 have included a cross-border element, of which 8 have already been concluded.

✅ Notably, in international cases, settlement agreements have been reached in 63% of concluded matters.

📈 These figures signal more than progress; they reflect growing trust in mediation and in AMCA.

✨ Our first Open Agenda with the Council just took place, and it was exactly what we hoped for: open, honest, and genuinely engaging.

A big thank you to Yeghishe Kirakosyan and Hayk Kupelyants, who shared their professional journeys and career paths, and walked us through key aspects of arbitration — from the role and functions of the Arbitration Council to the appointment of arbitrators, the qualities an arbitrator should have, the role of the arbitrator, and other questions raised by participants.

Stay tuned for future meetings with Arbitration Council members. 🎙️
