Under UAE private-sector employment law, an employee cannot be terminated, or given notice of termination, because of pregnancy, maternity leave or protected maternity-related absence.

The UAE has introduced new crisis and disaster relief rules allowing certain eligible families to receive up to AED 350,000 for qualifying damage to their homes and essential household contents.

Under Cabinet Resolution No. 135 of 2026, the scheme applies to qualifying UAE nationals receiving specified federal or local social support. Applications generally must be submitted within 30 days of the qualifying event.

The new framework came into effect on 15 August 2026 and replaces the previous disaster-relief regime dating back to 2008.

An Abu Dhabi court has fined a mother AED 80,000 after she travelled abroad for eight days and left her young daughter with a nanny, despite the child’s father being in the UAE, available and sharing joint custody.

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision, reinforcing an important principle: joint custody involves not only shared parental rights, but an obligation to respect the continuing role of the other parent.

The ruling should not be interpreted as a prohibition on nannies or ordinary third-party childcare. Its significance lies in bypassing an available joint custodian during an extended absence.
