Extended Naturalization Timelines (Nationality Law Overhaul)
Increased Residency Requirements: The period of legal residence required to apply for Portuguese citizenship by naturalization has been extended from 5 years to 10 years for standard third-country nationals. For citizens of CPLP (Portuguese-speaking) nations and EU member states, the requirement is 7 years.
New Clock Calculation: The citizenship eligibility clock now strictly begins from the date the first residence card is issued, rather than the date the initial application was submitted.
Stricter Integration Criteria: Applicants face enhanced civic knowledge requirements, formal declarations o
