Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “None of you have faith until I am more beloved to him than his children, his father, and all of the people.”

Hajj on Behalf of One's Father

Narrated `Abdullah bin `Abbas:
Al-Fadl (his brother) was riding behind Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and a woman from the tribe of Khath'am came and Al-Fadl started looking at her and she started looking at him. The Prophet (ﷺ) turned Al-Fadl's face to the other side. The woman said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! The obligation of Hajj enjoined by Allah on His devotees has become due on my father and he is old and weak, and he cannot sit firm on the Mount; may I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "Yes, you may." That happened during the Hajj-al-Wida (of the Prophet (ﷺ) ).

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1513)

Below is the reply from Shaikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baaz rahimahullah (the former Grand M***i of Saudi Arabia) regarding performing Hajj on behalf of someone's father.

Q: Your Eminence, is it permissible for me to pay someone to perform Hajj on behalf of my father? I have not performed Hajj myself, as I have no Mahram (spouse or unmarriageable relative). If it is not permissible, could I do this in the same year that I go to perform Hajj myself, In sha’a-Allah (if Allah wills)?

A: There is nothing wrong with paying someone to perform Hajj on behalf of your father, if you have not performed Hajj for yourself yet, but you cannot perform it on his behalf, unless you have performed it for yourself first. It is not forbidden for someone to perform Hajj for your father in the same year that you perform Hajj, if they have already performed Hajj for themselves. May Allah grant us success!
[Majmoo al-Fataawa Ibn Baaz, Vol.: 16; pg. 412]

Q: A person died without performing the obligation of Hajj (pilgrimage), and he left a will that a part of his wealth should be allocated for performing Hajj on his behalf. What is the validity of such Hajj? Is performing Hajj on behalf of someone equally rewarded like performing Hajj for oneself?

A: If a Muslim dies without performing the obligation of Hajj although fulfilling the conditions of Hajj, it is obligatory that a part of his wealth be allocated for performing Hajj on his behalf whether he left a will stating that or not. Furthermore, a person can perform Hajj on behalf of the deceased, provided that it is valid for him to perform Hajj (meet the conditions of being Muslim, sane and adult); he should have already performed Hajj for himself, for his Hajj as a delegate to be valid and discharge the obligation on the part of the deceased. As to whether the Hajj performed on behalf of someone else is equal to the Hajj performed for oneself, or more or less meritorious than it, this is up to Allah (سبحانه) Who is Aware of the conditions of His Servants and their intentions. There is no doubt that one should hasten to perform the obligation of Hajj as early as he can before death befalls him and in accordance with the evidence of the Shari'ah (Islamic law) which point out this issue as well as to avoid the sin of delaying it.

Bringing Your Children for Prayer, Umrah, and Hajj

As parents or commoners, we often see children in the masjid including in Al-Haramain (The Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque). How does Islam view this kind of act? And is there any basis for doing so? Let's check the hadith and explanation below.

Narrated Abu Qatada:
The Prophet (ﷺ) came out towards us, while carrying Umamah, the daughter of Abi Al-As (his granddaughter) over his shoulder. He prayed, and when he wanted to bow, he put her down, and when he stood up, he lifted her up. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5996)

As-Sai'b bin Yazid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I was seven years old when I was taken to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). This was during the time the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the Hajjat-ul-Wada' (Farewell Pilgrimage). (Al- Bukhari, Riyad as-Salihin, 1281)

It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:
“A woman held up a child of hers to the Prophet (ﷺ) during Hajj and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is there Hajj for this one?’ He said: ‘Yes, and you will be rewarded.’” Hadith Sahih according to Darussalam. (Sunan Ibn Majah, 2910)

From Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Any child who does Hajj then reaches puberty, he must do Hajj again.” Hadith Sahih according to Al-Albaani (Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 686) (Al-Shaafa’i, Musnad)

Ibn 'Abbas reports: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Any minor (child) who performs Hajj must perform it again after coming of age; any slave who performs Hajj and is then freed, must perform his Hajj again'." (At-Tabarani, Fiqh-us Sunnah)

Shaykh Ibn Baaz, rahimahullah: "The good deeds of a child who has not yet reached the age of puberty and their rewards are for him and not for his parents or anyone else. His parents are rewarded for having taught him to perform these deeds, for directing him to do good, and for helping him in them.
(Fataawa Islaamiyyah, 4/526]

In the conclusion: parents are rewarded for teaching and assisting their children to do good deeds and doing prayer, Umrah, and Hajj are among the best deeds. While the children themselves are rewarded for the deeds they do. But for the obligatory act, like Hajj and Umrah then those children have to do that again once they reach adulthood. Because their Hajj and Umrah as children are counted as voluntary acts.

Image1&2: The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques distribute bracelets and guiding posters (codes) among children especially non-Arabic speaking children who are accompanying their parents to perform Umrah to avoid getting lost in crowds at the Grand Mosque. The bracelet will contain basic information regarding the child, including the mobile number of the guardian.

Are We Going to Ride A Camel during Hajj?

We all have heard from our grandparents how Hajj used to be so challenging in the past. Some had to travel across the sea for months for Hajj. Some travelled on a caravan of carriages, camels and mules. Then people could travel by air. But when they reached Saudi Arabia the roads and transportation facility to al Haramain, the Hajj sites, and back to their hotels were still far from sufficient at that time.

No doubt that Hajj is not only a spiritual act of worship but also a physical one. But for some people like the elderly, disabled people, women, and people with health conditions this physical effort is beyond their capacity. Thus, we are so grateful that every year the transportation facility and accommodation for Hajj are improved.

This year, the government of Saudi Arabia has provided a free bus shuttle facility around al Haramain and the Hajj destinations. Alhamdulilah. But yes, we can still ride a camel if we want to for fun. What is visiting Saudi Arabia without enjoying camel riding? In fact, there is a destination where the visitors can enjoy camel riding along the migration route of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) from Mecca to Madina.
