Bringing Your Children for Prayer, Umrah, and Hajj
As parents or commoners, we often see children in the masjid including in Al-Haramain (The Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque). How does Islam view this kind of act? And is there any basis for doing so? Let's check the hadith and explanation below.
Narrated Abu Qatada:
The Prophet (ﷺ) came out towards us, while carrying Umamah, the daughter of Abi Al-As (his granddaughter) over his shoulder. He prayed, and when he wanted to bow, he put her down, and when he stood up, he lifted her up. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5996)
As-Sai'b bin Yazid (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I was seven years old when I was taken to perform Hajj (pilgrimage). This was during the time the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed the Hajjat-ul-Wada' (Farewell Pilgrimage). (Al- Bukhari, Riyad as-Salihin, 1281)
It was narrated that Jabir bin ‘Abdullah said:
“A woman held up a child of hers to the Prophet (ﷺ) during Hajj and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, is there Hajj for this one?’ He said: ‘Yes, and you will be rewarded.’” Hadith Sahih according to Darussalam. (Sunan Ibn Majah, 2910)
From Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Any child who does Hajj then reaches puberty, he must do Hajj again.” Hadith Sahih according to Al-Albaani (Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 686) (Al-Shaafa’i, Musnad)
Ibn 'Abbas reports: "The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Any minor (child) who performs Hajj must perform it again after coming of age; any slave who performs Hajj and is then freed, must perform his Hajj again'." (At-Tabarani, Fiqh-us Sunnah)
Shaykh Ibn Baaz, rahimahullah: "The good deeds of a child who has not yet reached the age of puberty and their rewards are for him and not for his parents or anyone else. His parents are rewarded for having taught him to perform these deeds, for directing him to do good, and for helping him in them.
(Fataawa Islaamiyyah, 4/526]
In the conclusion: parents are rewarded for teaching and assisting their children to do good deeds and doing prayer, Umrah, and Hajj are among the best deeds. While the children themselves are rewarded for the deeds they do. But for the obligatory act, like Hajj and Umrah then those children have to do that again once they reach adulthood. Because their Hajj and Umrah as children are counted as voluntary acts.
Image1&2: The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques distribute bracelets and guiding posters (codes) among children especially non-Arabic speaking children who are accompanying their parents to perform Umrah to avoid getting lost in crowds at the Grand Mosque. The bracelet will contain basic information regarding the child, including the mobile number of the guardian.
