Theme: Safe Campuses: Ending Sexual Harassment and Exploitation by Lecturers
We discuss GBV by peers and staff, reporting mechanisms, student protection, and the existing legal framework.

Theme: From the Margins to the Front: How Student Unions Can Drive Womenโ€™s Participation
We explore how student unions can create safe spaces, mentorship, and quotas to increase womenโ€™s representation.

We tackle poor disposal facilities, the need for safe hygienic spaces, and the push for a pad allowance policy in universities and HELSB.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM TODAY'S STUDENT WELFARE CAMPAIGN PROGRAMME ON INCLUSIVE EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS' WITH DISABILITIES

Empowering inclusivity in higher education starts with dismantling the barriers that limit our peers. During our recent campaign session, we explored the critical landscape of disability rights and academic access at the University of Zambia. Here are the key insights shared by our distinguished guest speakers:

Mapalo Sichone: The Reality of Academic Access
Overcoming Material Barriers:
- Barriers: Most materials are in ink format, shortage of Braille-trained instructors, and poor campus infrastructure limits movement, attendance, and co-curricular participation for visually impaired students.
- Solutions: Advocacy led to computer-based assessments and use of assistive tech like Adobe Acrobat.
- Core Message: _"Nothing For Us Without Us"_ โ€” Students with disabilities must be included in decision-making. Disability โ‰  lack of competency.

2. John Mvula - Legal Frameworks & Institutional Gaps
- Legal Basis: Inclusive education is a human right under the UN CRPD, not charity. Zambiaโ€™s Persons with Disabilities Act 2012 is progressive but poorly implemented.
- Gaps: The Higher Education Act lacks mandates for assistive tech and dedicated support units.
- Recommendations: Universities need inclusion policies, accessibility audits, retrofitted infrastructure, and for student unions to treat accessibility as a general welfare issue.

Conclusion:
True inclusion requires: stronger disability support offices, staff training on inclusive mindsets, enforcing existing laws, and co-creating solutions _with_ students with disabilities to ensure dignity and independence for all.

The Zambia Law Studentsโ€™ Journal (ZLSJ), in collaboration with ZANASU and LSGZ, is proud to announce the official launch of the Student Welfare National Essay Competition.

This initiative provides students across Zambia with an opportunity to engage critically with key issues affecting student welfare, contribute meaningful legal and policy discourse, and propose innovative solutions that can shape the future of higher education.

Participants are invited to submit original essays on any of the designated competition topics. Outstanding submissions will receive national recognition, with the top entries contributing to the development of the National Student Welfare Policy Report.

An informed electorate is the backbone of democracy. The Legal Scholars' Guild of Zambia hosted a webinar with Hon. Christopher Kang'ombe and Suzyo Njobvu to break it down.

Hon. Kang'ombe spoke on how our laws shape governance. The 2016 amendments gave us direct election of mayors and a presidential running mate. The Bill 7 amendments increased nominated MP seats to 11 and introduced proportional representation for women, youth and PWDs. He reminded us that every vote decides who makes laws on tax, health and treaties. Legal professionals also have a duty to educate the public and hold leaders accountable.

Mr. Njobvu shared the basics: You must be 18+, Zambian, with a Green NRC and Voterโ€™s Card. Verify your details on *214 # before Aug 13. You will cast 4 ballots: President, MP, Mayor & Councilor. Mark with a clear "X" for your vote to count. Your vote matters โ€” elections are won by small margins. And vote buying is illegal.

As we prepare to vote and support our preferred candidates, remember there was Zambia before the elections and there is Zambia after elections. So with our political differences, let us still maintain the peace and unity we all cherish as Zambians.
