🫀🏊‍♂️ A swimmer’s heart doesn’t just beat. It adapts.

Spend enough time training in the water, and the cardiovascular system begins responding to the repeated demand.

With consistent endurance training, swimmers may develop cardiovascular adaptations seen in trained athletes — including an increased stroke volume, meaning the heart can pump more blood with each beat, and, in many athletes, a lower resting heart rate. The body can also become more efficient at delivering and using oxygen during exercise.

But here’s the important part:

A “swimmer’s heart” isn’t a different kind of heart — and swimming alone doesn’t automatically mean a bigger or healthier heart.

These adaptations depend on factors such as training volume, intensity, duration, and the individual athlete.

It’s the cardiovascular system adapting to repeated training.

Stroke after stroke.
Lap after lap.
Month after month.

The transformation you feel in the pool isn’t only happening in your shoulders, lungs, or muscles.

Some of the most powerful adaptations are happening where you can’t see them. ❤️🌊

You train the stroke.
Your body trains the system.

Some people get in the water to swim…

Others get in the water to find themselves again. 🌊

Underwater, the entire world changes.

The noise disappears.
Everything becomes distant.
And whatever was weighing on you seconds ago… stays above the surface.

No messages.
No one asking anything from you.
No expectations.

Just your heartbeat, your breath, and the sound of water moving around you.

And somewhere in that small space between one breath and the next…

You realize something:

You’re not escaping the world.
You’ve simply found a place where the world can’t follow you.

Maybe that’s why some people don’t just love swimming.

They need it.

They need that moment when their head slips beneath the surface and everything else disappears.

They need the kind of exhaustion that finally makes the mind go quiet.

They need that last meter when the body is begging to stop… but they keep going because they don’t want the moment to end.

Swimmers know this feeling.

You climb out of the pool physically exhausted…

yet somehow, you feel lighter than when you went in.

And that’s the part that’s almost impossible to explain to someone who has never truly loved the water.

We don’t always come back because we want to swim faster.

Sometimes…

we come back because there’s a version of ourselves we can only find underwater. 🖤🌊

The Zambia Swimming Union successfully hosted an in-house Technical Officials training course, equipping 40 participants from our member clubs with a solid foundation in the basic rules of swimming.

This milestone is a big step toward strengthening our officiating pool and ensuring integrity and fairness in the sport.

We thank the American International School for availing their facilities to host our training program and all the participants for their commitment and enthusiasm to train.

We look forward to seeing them confidently take their place on deck.

Together, we continue to raise the standard of swimming in Zambia. 🏊‍♂️
