Meet Rakus, a male Sumatran orangutan who recently stunned scientists with an extraordinary display of self-care in the wild. Spotted in Indonesia’s Gunung Leuser National Park with a noticeable wound on his right cheek—likely from a clash with another orangutan—Rakus did something remarkable.

Researchers observed him carefully selecting a plant called akar kuning (Fibraurea tinctoria), a climbing vine known in traditional medicine for its pain-relieving and antibacterial properties. Rakus chewed the plant’s stems and leaves, then applied the juice directly to his wound. He even placed the chewed pulp over the injury like a natural bandage—and repeated the process for several days.

Amazingly, the wound showed no signs of infection and fully closed within a month.

This behavior, documented by a team of primatologists, is believed to be one of the first recorded cases of a wild animal using a medicinal plant to treat itself. The discovery offers compelling insights into the intelligence of great apes—and opens the door to new research on how animals instinctively use natural remedies for healing.
