The story of Aeschylus’ death is one of the strangest tales from ancient Greece.

Aeschylus was a famous Greek playwright, often called the father of tragedy, and according to later historical accounts, he died in 458 BC after an eagle dropped a tortoise onto his bald head.

Eagles sometimes crack open tortoise shells by dropping them onto rocks from the sky. Legend says the bird mistook Aeschylus’ smooth bald head for a stone and accidentally killed him.

While historians debate whether the story is fully true or partly myth, it became famous because of how bizarre and ironic it sounds.

The legend becomes even stranger because Aeschylus was supposedly trying to avoid a prophecy that he would die from a falling object.

To stay safe, he reportedly spent more time outdoors away from buildings, only for the “falling object” to still find him in an unexpected way.
