🚨 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗖𝗔𝗡’𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗦𝗧𝗨𝗙𝗙 𝗨𝗣… 🤯 This motorist had to go to court.

He arrives, finds somewhere to park, goes inside and deals with what he needs to deal with.

Then he comes back out…

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗔 𝗥𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛. 😳

Now, let's be fair.

If the way he parked was in contravention of the applicable parking rules, then the fact that other vehicles may also have been parked improperly doesn't automatically make his fine invalid.

But this is where the video raises an interesting question about fair and consistent enforcement.

Because look at what the camera captures around him.

There are vehicles parked along the street.

Vehicles appear to be positioned in ways that may obstruct parts of the roadway.

Others appear to be on the pavement or close to a turning area.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗤𝗨𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗦𝗡’𝗧 “𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗡’𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗔𝗟𝗦𝗢 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗗?”

We simply don't know what circumstances applied to each vehicle.

The real question is:

𝗜𝗦 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝗡𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗖𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗣𝗣𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗗 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗥𝗟𝗬, 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗟𝗬 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗬?

That's an important distinction.

We're 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗦𝗔𝗬𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗪𝗔𝗦 𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧.

We're asking whether the circumstances surrounding parking at this court create a situation where ordinary motorists can realistically comply with the rules.

Because think about it.

You have a court date.

You need to be there.

There are limited parking spaces.

You eventually find somewhere to park, attend court, and come back out…

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗨’𝗩𝗘 𝗚𝗢𝗧 𝗔 𝗥𝟭,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗙𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗢𝗙 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗘𝗟𝗦𝗘.

That doesn't mean the fine is automatically unlawful.

But it certainly makes us ask:

𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗔 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗔𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗟𝗘 𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗥𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗗 𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧 𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗦𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗬 𝗣𝗘𝗢𝗣𝗟𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗗 𝗧𝗢 𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗗?

A video circulating on social media has sparked serious questions after it allegedly shows a police officer slapping a man outside Lwandle Police Station in Strand.

According to reports, the incident followed a verbal confrontation between the man and the officer. Another police officer can be seen stepping in and escorting his colleague back into the station.

But there’s more to the story.

The man had reportedly gone to the police station after allegedly being stabbed. The officer can reportedly be heard accusing him of arriving at the station while intoxicated and verbally disrespecting police members before the situation escalated.

𝗡𝗢 𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗟𝗘𝗗 𝗨𝗣 𝗧𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗡𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 — 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗪 𝗕𝗘𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗘𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗.

Western Cape police have confirmed that an assault case has been opened and that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

No arrests have reportedly been made, while SAPS has also instituted internal disciplinary proceedings against the officer.

The man was reportedly taken to a medical facility for treatment following the incident.

Western Cape MEC for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais has condemned the alleged conduct and confirmed that a formal complaint was lodged with IPID, saying incidents like this risk further damaging public trust in the police.

According to reports, a mechanic allegedly took a KZN Metro Police vehicle out for a little “joy ride” with his girlfriend and friends.

And apparently, that was only the beginning…

The mechanic allegedly failed to stop when police instructed him to do so.

He was reportedly also found **driving under the influence** and allegedly **without a valid driver’s licence**.

A Metro Police vehicle.
A mechanic behind the wheel.
His girlfriend and friends allegedly along for the ride.
A joy ride.
A failure to stop.
Alleged drunk driving.
And allegedly no licence.

There are honestly so many questions here…

**How did a mechanic allegedly end up driving a Metro Police vehicle with his girlfriend and friends in the first place?** 🤔

We’ve ALL been there.

You’re driving along, you’re already running late… and then you come around the corner and find a group of cyclists ahead of you.

Two… three… sometimes a whole group riding together.

And suddenly the question is:

**𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗨𝗟𝗘𝗦?**

Before anyone gets offended — this isn’t about saying cyclists don’t belong on our roads.

They absolutely do.

But cyclists are road users, and with that comes **rights AND responsibilities.**

Under Regulation 311 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, cyclists riding on a public road are required to ride **in single file**, except when overtaking another cyclist. Two or more cyclists may not overtake another vehicle at the same time.

So if you see a group of cyclists riding three or four abreast simply because they are travelling together, that is **not what the national regulation provides for.**

Cyclists also have responsibilities when it comes to signalling, keeping control of their bicycles and avoiding dangerous swerving or behaviour that could place other road users at risk.

And what about where they should ride?

Where a cycle lane is provided, applicable rules may require cyclists to use it. Where there isn't one, rules generally require cyclists to keep to the left side of the roadway as closely as practicable. Durban’s 2024 Non-Motorised Transport By-law contains these requirements too.

𝗕𝗨𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘’𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘…

Being right about the rules does NOT give motorists permission to intimidate, squeeze, hoot aggressively at or dangerously overtake cyclists.

Cyclists are vulnerable road users.

A motorist still has a duty to drive with reasonable care and must only overtake when it is safe to do so.

And here’s something many people get wrong:

There is **not a blanket national one-metre passing rule contained in Regulation 311**. The High Court has specifically noted that the National Regulations do not prescribe a specific passing distance, while the Western Cape has its own legislation requiring at least one metre when passing cyclists.

So whether you're behind the steering wheel or sitting on a bicycle…

**THE ROAD RULES APPLY TO YOU.**

Cyclists have rights.

Motorists have rights.

But both have responsibilities.

Because being frustrated in traffic is one thing.

Someone getting seriously injured or killed is something else entirely.

So let’s have the conversation without the usual:

“ALL CYCLISTS ARE ARROGANT!”

or

“ALL MOTORISTS ARE DANGEROUS!”
