Do you guys know how many default judgments and default awards our courts and tribunals grant simply because people ignore legal documents?It happens far more often than you might think.
I've dealt with more than a handful of CCMA matters where employers simply ignored the referral papers or notices, believing they could avoid the process by doing nothing. They failed to attend conciliation or arbitration, and the CCMA proceeded in their absence, issuing an award ordering them to pay compensation to the employee.They ignored the award too.
Then one day, the Sheriff arrived with a warrant to attach their assets in order to satisfy the award.
Suddenly, the matter became very real. That's when they rushed to seek legal advice but by then, they were already on the back foot.
The lesson is simple: Ignoring a summons, notice, or any legal document will not make it disappear. Whether it's a divorce summons, a CCMA referral, a court notice, or any legal process, respond promptly and seek legal advice. Acting early can protect your rights and save you from costly consequences later.
