Today I would like to engage on the matter of debt counselling (debt review).

I have seen a number of posts criticizing debt review and I would like to believe that more education is needed on this topic.

Debt review is aimed to assist over-indebted consumers. By this I mean if you can no longer honour your credit agreements possibly because of the forever increasing cost of living. These are usually people at a risk of losing their homes or vehicles through repossession. Some are at a risk of getting judgements against their name.

The role of the debt counsellor is to approach the credit providers and request restructuring of your installment. This allows you to pay lesser installment and can actually breath. This allows you to have extra money after pay day.

Now, the issue or the reason why most people are critiquing debt review is because by law you no longer allowed to take more credits while under debt review. People have a problem with this section. The question then arises, why would you want to take more debts when you already over-indebted? Why don’t you pay back everything first then come back to the credit market.

All in all, debt review is a mechanism in place to encourage a debt free life.
