WOMAN ACCUSED OF DEFRAUDING EMFULENI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY DENIED BAIL

VANDERBIJLPARK - A 25-year-old woman accused of defrauding Emfuleni Local Municipality of approximately R424,000 has been denied bail.

Janitha van Reenen Coetzee appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday after her arrest on 20 May 2026. The National Prosecuting Authority welcomed the court’s decision.

According to the State, Coetzee allegedly posed as an independent agent offering discounts on outstanding municipal accounts. Victims handed over cash for supposed discounted payments, but the funds were never paid to the municipality.

She is also accused of submitting false claims, causing the municipality to pay her around R424 000 that never reached the intended beneficiaries.

The scam was uncovered by the late Financial Officer Martha Mani Rantsofu, who flagged suspicious claims before her passing. Prosecutor Moses Raditsela opposed bail, citing risks of witness interference and flight, as the accused’s address could not be verified.

Magistrate Mamburu ruled that her release would not be in the interests of justice. The case was postponed to 23 June 2026 for further investigation.
