EASTERN CAPE – The Eastern Cape Missing Person and Trafficking Unit wishes to express serious concern regarding developments surrounding the court proceedings involving an Ethiopian national who was arrested in eQonce in connection with two criminal dockets, including allegations of selling counterfeit alcohol, fraud, and contravention of the Eastern Cape liquor legislation.
According to information received, the accused appeared in court without the knowledge of the investigating team, which included members of the Commercial Crime Unit and the Eastern Cape Missing Person and Trafficking Unit.
The circumstances surrounding this court appearance have raised serious concerns regarding communication, coordination and transparency in the handling of the matter.
The Unit has formally engaged the relevant Anti-Corruption authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding these developments and determine whether any misconduct or unlawful interference occurred.

We fully understand the concerns and expectations of the Eastern Cape community, particularly those who expected the law to take its course following the arrest.
Our commitment to fighting corruption, organised crime, fraud and illicit trading remains firm and unwavering.
We will continue working with relevant law enforcement agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this matter are properly investigated, accountability is pursued where warranted, and justice is served in accordance with the law.
