WORDS: "WASTE MANAGEMENT" ❗️

17 Years, 1300 mentions in Reports and Plans.

Since 2009, "waste management" has been cited approximately,1300 times in official management plans and service provider reports.

The City of Cape Town knows waste is the number 1 attractant on the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) borders for baboons and other wildlife.

Yet, they are actively omitting their Statutory Obligations and Duties to create a safe and protected environment in and around baboon ranges :

🚫 Integrated Waste Management By-law (2009):
Mandates proper waste control in baboon affected areas -Ignored.

🚫 Animal Keeping By-law:
Classifies unsecured waste as "negligent feeding"- Ignored.

The City fails to supply baboon-proof bins or enforce these laws, creating the very habituation of wildlife they complain about.

Now, they want to placate us with a new excuse: "waste is not the main driver." Disingenuous much!

You mismanaged the urban edge for 17 years, not enforcing your own laws and not delivering on infrastructure, during which period you punish baboons with relocation or death to address your omissions.

More excuses, more inaction, more baboons being killed.

📖 THE NEW BESTSELLER:
"LOVE TO HATE" — A CAPE PENINSULA TRAGEDY 📖

If you look at the history of our baboons, it reads like a bestseller where the heroes were suddenly rewritten as the villains.

We call this story "Love TO Hate."

CHAPTER 1: THE GUARDIANS (1997-1998)

The story begins with a promise. In 1997, the narrative was one of "Protected Status". The Authorities were the authors of a tale about safeguarding a vulnerable population at risk. We were told to love them, to value them as our natural heritage, and to protect them at all costs.

THE PLOT TWIST:
THE CHANGE IN VOCABULARY

But then, the editors stepped in. The word "Protection" was scrubbed from the script. In its place, the Authorities began writing a new narrative based on "pain aversion" and "nuisance management".

This wasn't just a change in policy; it was a change in the readers' hearts.

CHAPTER 2: FROM NEIGHBORS TO NUISANCE AND LEAST CONCERN
By implementing only that part of the management plans that focus on "removal" and "aversion," the Authorities changed the way residents view their wild neighbors. The narrative shifted from a story of coexistence to a story of "problem animals", "nuisance" and "of least concern".

THE DARK SEQUEL: VIGILANTE JUSTICE

When the official story says "get rid of them" or "inflict pain" and "least concern" the readers take the law into their own hands.

This is the most horrific chapter of the book:
Residents shooting baboons with paintballs and pellet guns.
The silent tragedy of poisoning.
Nearly 60% of baboon deaths now caused by human hands.

THE ENDING (THAT WE CAN STILL CHANGE)

The Authorities have authored a narrative of "Removal." They have moved the public from Love to Hate by changing the labels they use. But we don't have to accept this ending.
It’s time to demand a rewrite. We need to go back to the original draft where "Protection" wasn't just a word in a document, but a commitment to the lives of these animals.
Don't let them rewrite our compassion.

The Mirror is Talking:
It’s Not a Baboon Problem.
It’s a Human Problem.

For five months, we analyzed every single comment, critique, and piece of feedback across our social media platforms regarding the ongoing baboon-human conflict on the Cape Peninsula.

From local residents in the thick of it, to concerned citizens across South Africa, to voices in the international community, the verdict is overwhelmingly clear.

Over 90% of you agree on one undeniable truth: the "baboon problem" is entirely a human creation.

Here is what the data shows:

Encroachment and poor waste management are the causes:
Humans have aggressively moved onto the borders and into traditional baboon ranges with no regard to the attractants offered to baboons, creating the conflict.

Flouted Legislation:
Current laws are not being enforced, allowing irresponsible human behavior to continue without accountability.

The Wrong Targets:
Management authorities consistently choose to remove or punish the baboon rather than address the root human cause.

Zero Adaptability:
Residents can openly state they refuse to baboon-proof their properties, yet the animal pays the ultimate price for that defiance.

The Bottom Line:
We have never truly managed the human element. When an animal is penalized because a human refuses to adapt to nature, the system is broken. It is time to stop punishing wildlife for human behavior.

Manage the humans. Enforce the laws. Protect the Peninsula and its Natural Assets which the Authorities use as a "tool" to attract tourism.

The superior human has not realised that baboons are in the Urban Areas because the very superior human cannot secure his trash❗️👇

Blame the Baboon❓️

HUMAN ENTITLEMENT TRUMPS BABOON WELFARE.

We moved into or on the borders of their space, left our trash wide open, and now we punish them for trying to survive.

Since at least 2002, the Cape Peninsula Chacma Baboons have been under official "management" to protect them. But today, the strategy has completely flipped from conservation to pain aversion and removal of the very animals that we once wanted to protect.

Instead of managing human behavior, authorities and certain residents have chosen an easier scapegoat: Blame the baboon!

Look at how we respond to wildlife in urban areas:

Baboon searches for unsecured food?
Hit them with paintball guns and bear bangers.

No strategic fencing installed? Remove the baboon.

No baboon-proof bins provided? Remove the baboon.

No law enforcement on waste? Remove the baboon.

No law enforcement on harming baboons?
Remove the baboon

The entire system relies on pain aversion and forced removal.

We refuse to secure our neighborhoods, yet the animals pay the price.

In certain areas, a shocking 72% of baboon injuries and deaths of admissions to the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are entirely human-induced, compounded by government-sanctioned culling protocols.

This isn't protection it’s displacement driven by human convenience. It is time to shift the responsibility back to where it belongs.

Start managing the human element who elected to reside on the borders of a National Park.

We are exactly where we were in 1998, the only difference is now we are blaming the baboon.
