Most overstay problems don't start with someone ignoring the rules. They start with someone assuming they had more time than they actually did.
With visitors arriving from Europe, the US, Australia, Namibia and Zimbabwe for South Africa's high season, it's worth knowing exactly what your passport stamp or visa allows before you rely on it. Permitted stay periods differ by nationality, and visa-exempt entry still comes with a fixed limit.
If you think you may need more time, don't leave it until the end of your stay. Extension applications generally need to be submitted well before your current visa or permitted stay expires, often at least 60 days ahead. On a 90-day stay, that deadline can arrive within your first month in the country.
The consequences of getting this wrong aren't small. An overstay can result in being declared undesirable and barred from re-entering South Africa, in some cases for several years, which is far more disruptive than a short delay at the airport.
