Rand weakens amid new Lockdown Restrictions Level 4 in SA

The Rand starts the new week slightly weaker, after it was announced that SA will move back to Level 4 Lockdown starting today.

In response to the rise in Covid infections, President Ramaphosa held the “Family Meeting” last night and implemented a fresh set of restrictions banning the sale of alcohol, increasing curfew hours and closing schools early for winter break, amongst other restrictions.

Heading abroad, on Friday the US announced a rise in inflation of 3.4% from a year ago, which is also the biggest increase since 1992. Personal income declined 2% for the month of May, as the government stimulus checks start to wear off. Investors will remain focused on any inflation data and how the FED will combat the rise should it spiral out of control.

It is fairly quiet on the data calendar for today with more notable news later this week. Have a wonderful week and stay safe.
