The 2023 AIPLA Mid-Winter Institute has started and the Women in IP Breakfast is tomorrow, Thursday, February 2 with Dr. Christina Marinakis speaking on the following topic:
Gender Bias in the Courtroom: Perception or Reality?
Description: This presentation reviews historical and recent findings of social-science research on how jurors perceive female attorneys. Dr. Marinakis will provide a recap of her own research on how presentation style can help or hinder the effects of gender bias in the courtroom. She also provides advice on how best to overcome the challenges of being a female member of the trial team and strategies for capitalizing on its advantages. Additional studies and psychological concepts will ultimately demonstrate the benefits of a diverse trial team.
Brief bio:
Dr. Marinakis has over 20 years of experience in jury research, study, and applied practice in law and psychology. Clients have lauded Christina as an insightful, trusted advisor who is the “best in the business” at jury selection and developing pithy trial themes. Notable successes include assisting the prosecution with jury selection and theme development in State of Minnesota v. Derek Chauvin, advising plaintiffs regarding jury selection and trial themes in Vanessa Bryant v. Tomorrow, May 18th, is the Women in IP Breakfast Meeting at the 2022 AIPLA Spring Meeting in New Orleans, and hope to see you there!

The Women in IP Spring Breakfast Meeting: *Implicit Bias in the Law and Law Firms* with Kathlyn G. Perez is on Wednesday, May 18th at 6:45 AM.

Program details: Implicit biases are an unconscious product of our encounters from childhood through adulthood, influenced by everything from geographic location to social class, mental abilities, profession, age, gender, family and marital status. These ingrained impressions are further coloured by our own observations, the media and stereotypes. Implicit biases have been proven to be an impediment to companies’ well-meaning diversity, equity and inclusion goals. This training will educate AIPLA's members on the science behind implicit (unconscious) bias and teach strategies for reducing its impact in the law firms in the areas of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and performance evaluations. In addition, Kathlyn will discuss the business case for strengthening DEI, and provide information on trends in law firm DEI initiatives and client demands for measurable DEI goals and commitments.
