While issuing directions to the State Governments and Union Territories to strictly comply with some of the recommendations of its Panel for S*x Workers with respect to conditions conducive to s*x workers to live with dignity in accordance with Article 21 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court, on May 19, took note of the fact that the Union Government had expressed reservations with the other recommendations of the panel in this regard.

A Bench comprising Justices L. Nageswara Rao, B.R. Gavai and A.S. Bopanna directed the Union Government to respond to the other recommendations made by the Panel within a period of six weeks.

The Panel which was bestowed with the mandate to make recommendations on issues pertaining to prevention of trafficking, rehabilitation of s*x workers who want to quit s*x work and the conditions conducive for s*x workers to live with dignity in accordance with Article 21 of the Constitution of India, after consulting with all the stakeholders, had submitted a detailed report on the terms of reference.

The Central Government had accepted some of its recommendations which the Apex Court has now directed the States to adopt.

In a historic development, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered that the 152-year old sedition law under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code should be effectively kept in abeyance till the Union Government reconsiders the provision.

In an interim order, the Court urged the Centre and the State governments to refrain from registering any FIRs under the said provision while it was under re-consideration.

A bench comprising the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli held that all pending cases, appeals and proceedings with respect to charges framed under Section124 A be kept in abeyance. Adjudication with respect to other sections may proceed with no prejudice be caused to the accused, it held.

The Supreme Court has held that for the restriction on remarriage after divorce, as specified under Section 15 of the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, to apply, it is not necessary that the other party should bring up the appeal against the Family Court decree before the High Court within the limitation period. Mere filing of appeal within the limitation period is sufficient for Section 15 to apply.
