I get this question often! An LLC is a legal entity that can be formed to operate a business. It is very popular for its many benefits such as limited liability protection, tax benefits, and its flexibility. LLC’s are easy to run and maintain, and the owner is generally not personally liable for any debts incurred by the LLC. Single member LLC’s provide pass through taxation, where the profits and losses the business incurs are “passed through” to the owner’s personal tax return.

On the other hand, an “S Corp” is NOT a legal entity; but instead is a tax election. This means that a single member LLC owner can choose to be taxed by the IRS as an S Corp if it makes financial sense for the LLC.
